My baby wont drink - any advice??

90% of the time my 9 month old baby refuses bottles, beakers, cups, spoons... everything and every type of liquid (tried milk (formula and cows) water, juice).

I'm not worried about him being dehydrated as I make sure all his food has milk and water in it, and he has lots of wet nappies. But he just turns his head away 90% of the time we offer him liquids - he will very occasionally sip from a cup.

I've offered him liquid before, during and after meals - no difference - he just turns his head away.

We are not making a big deal out of it and hoping he will eventually learn to take in liquid in his own time, but it is a bit worrying.

Does anyone else have this experience? If so what did you do?

I have a 14 month old but from the time she was able to move independantly I have had a number of tommee tippee flip sip cups with drinks in laid around the house.

I usually have one in the living room, one in the study and one in the kitchen along with a bowl of some kind of snack.
I don't often see her drinking anything but when I check the beakers they've moved and there isn't much drink left.

We also had a bit of a problem at first that we offered an anyway up cup and she couldn't drink from it

Thanks - have tried that too, he just seems to think they are toys... even when I pretend to drink from them he just doesn't seem to understand about drinking!
Just flummoxed!

My ds was exactly the same, he wouldn't drink anything until he was 12mths if it didn't come directly from a breast!

After then he started drinking juce(wouldn't touch water) from a tommee tippee flip top with the 3 holes or from a straw.

I would keep offering him a beaker with his meals, but he will get the hang of it.

Hi Gledhill - not seen you on here before. Just intrigued by your posting name, and hope you don't mind me asking, but if that is/was your name, was your mum a teacher?

My dd also refused to drink from anything except my breast until she was about 10 months old, when she eventually took to a playtex cup. I'm guessing that you're still bf'ing too, so he is getting some liquid from you at least? If so then persevere and he'll get there in the end!

Hi,
Mu grandad was a teacher, but not my mum. Gledhill was my maiden name... seemed the only name not taken!

I breastfed him for 8 months and he weaned himself off.

He has lots of liquid in his food... guess he'll do it in his own time!

Thanks

Oh wow - so not drinking anything then! Not come across that before, but as you say, he still has plenty of wet nappies, so must be getting it from somewhere. You don't have a pond or a water trough do you?

You're not the Gledhill that I know then. Would have been quite a coincidence if you had been, but you just never know!

CantSleepWontSleep · 07/10/2007 20:48

Oh - using my normal posting name instead of my halloween one btw, but I was the previous poster!

Gledhill · 09/10/2007 14:01

No no ponds or troughs... but maybe that's an idea!
Maybe he's part camel
