Cold remedies and nursery

Hi all,

My 8 month old is due to start nursery Tuesday, had her settling sessions over the last week. Unfortunately she's now got a cold, no temperature and mostly herself (cuddly but nothing major), she's got a constant runny nose which makes her cough when she's laying flat. I'm looking for advice both as to whether I should send her to nursery with a blocked up nose as well as any magic remedies to help her settle. Thank you in advance!

Runny/blocked noses will probably be a semi permanent feature once your child starts nursery! There will be snot constantly from now until at least spring. Especially with the younger kids. Sorry!

You’d need to check your nursery policy about cold remedies. Our nursery will only administer Calpol (for temperatures only), teething gel and prescription medication.

@FizzingWhizzbee123 thanks, yes I figured as much, part of me thought that if I'm not sending her with a runny nose she might as well not start until April as I'm sure it's going to be continuous.
Sorry I didn't make myself clear, first time mum stressing about nursery and back to work all on a lack of sleep 😬 I meant does anyone have any advice of what I can try between now and Tuesday which helps ease a runny nose.

With a cough she will need to tested for covid before she can return to nursery and everyone else in the house needs to isolate until you hopefully get a negative result.

Calpol plugs in can be good at easing the blocked nose. If she sleeps in a cot then try raising the cot at the head end.

@lockdownseperation I didn't think she would because it's only when she's laying down which to me is the post nasal drip?

Anyone with a persistent cough which is classed at 3 times in 24 hours needs to be tested.

Yeah if she has a cough they’ll send her home and ask you to get her tested.

I went through this a few weeks ago. Things that worked for me were -

  • calpol menthol plug
  • nasal saline spray
  • snufflebabe
  • tilting the cot at the head end ever so slightly for sleep. This was really effective and helped with congestion.
