My ds (8months) can pick up stuff and put it in his mouth, even eat it. Sometimes if I'm having crisps, I give him a baby rice cake. Eats it fine. He will not eat at meal times himself. We spoon fed btw, and feed him by hand or fork, bits of our meals. When I put food on his high chair tray, he just looks at it, then me & opens his mouth. If I dont put food in he gets cross (understatement). So how do I encourage him to feed himself?

He has a strong gag reflex, it makes him gag and be sick a lot with bigger pieces of things like soft bread. Could that have put him off? If I make him a sandwich, I have to break teeny bits off and give it to him. He can chew, he's chewed tough meat and swalloed no issues, just wants me to put it in his mouth!

Might not be the answer others give but I would roll with it.

My 9 month old will eat a rusk just fine but I spoon feed the pureed food as she cant control a spoon. I tried to give her a soft biscotti and she wouldnt eat it unless I fed her a tiny bit at a time... yet a hard biscotti she devours (and anything else she finds on the floor)

I even caught her eating her sisters toast thr other day.

I still get problems with my 3 year old where I have to feed them otherwise they wouldnt eat. Probably making a rod for my back but I kinda hope I wont be going on their dates and feeding them in front of the new bf/gf Grin

Not much help, I still have this with my 22 month old. She can actually fully independently use a spoon and folk but most of the time will not eat much unless I put it in her mouth. Its not because she not hungry, she very clear when she's full. I just continue to inintally place meal in front of her and encourage her to eat herself then eventually end up feeding her.

Thanks, I'll just go with it but keep encouraging him to feed himself x
