Hi my 10 month old can't sit unaided
(Seems to struggle with balance)
I'd appreciate any advice!

Speak to your HV, it's the late end of normal and there may be a physical issue that needs treating.

Does he/she do much tummy time? That's meant to help strengthen their neck and back which they need to sit up. My son used to hate tummy tome so I did it in short burst so like 2 mins at a time but as many times as possible throughout the day.

Also have you got a bumbo seat or similar as that encourages them to sit up.

Have you spoke to a health visitor about it? :)

My DS was referred to the paediatrician at 12 months because he wasn't sitting. He was commando crawling at a pace that Usain Bolt would have been proud of but not pulling to standing, wouldn't take steps when you held him upright and of course wasn't sitting. The doctor could find no problems with him but wanted him back in a few months if he still wasn't.

He was. Just turns out he did things at his pace and because he was mobile he had zero interest in sitting still. He didn't walk till 16 months but went from first steps, to walking, to running in 2 days.

Same with talking. Whilst we understood his babbles, he didn't bother with actual words until it got frustrating. Then it was sentences pretty quick.

He's still the same now at 13; won't bother learning to do anything until he has to do it and then he masters it instantly. Shoe laces are the most recent example I can think of!

But yes, you should mention it to the HV reasonably soon in case there is an issue.

Thankyou for your responses :)
I've spoken to my HV and am waiting for an appointment to check muscle development. Tummy time is no problem, spends all day rolling around.
However my dd is a tall baby when sitting she doesn't seem to keep still
With both sitting and standing she seems to struggle with balance.
I have tried the seats but hates being in them and wants to be back rolling around x

Thankyou for your response!
My dd isn't crawling either but will move into crawling position. She's constantly rolling around but shows no interest in sitting and wants to be back rolling about x

I think its a good sign that she's mobile- rolling about. My son didn't walk until 18 months which worried me as it was later than our friends.

With his talking he was about 3 months late too but once he started he caught up within a week or two. They just do things in their own way. I think there's way too much emphasise on doing things at a certain time.

SillyBub · 27/08/2020 21:03

@missglitter20 I'm sure my DS wouldn't have bothered crawling if we lived where we do now. He too was a roller and we had a huge lounge that he could roll around. As he got a bit older he realised that there was more of the flat to discover and conquer and thanks to a weird, long and narrow u-shaped hallway, the rolling wasn't working for him (ouch!) so he mastered the commando crawling from his rolled onto his front position. Why bother going on his knees when he didn't have to?

That's reassuring to hear!
I became concerned about her standing and sitting as she shows no interest in doing it, whereas a friends dc is a few weeks older and is already walking which I think has made me worried as my dd can't do any of them things.
I'm just hoping that it's nothing to worry about and will soon catch up x

Try not to compare her to other babies (I know how easy this is to do though!)

Mention it to the health visitor as you're worried, but it may be that she's just doing things in her own time. My DS is nearly 11 months and isn't pulling himself up or able to stand if you prop him against something. He just keels over.

My son wasn't sitting at 10 months but he was crawling, climbing and cruising on furniture. I couldn't tell if he couldn't sit unaided only because he was so active and generally hated sitting down anyway. I used to put him down on his bottom and a split second later he would roll over and crawl or get up to cruise. But at 11 months, for the first time I put him in the adult bath and had DH with me to hold him and that's when he actually sat down unaided. Maybe the bubble bath was interesting for him to sit still but have put down he sat at 11 months unaided.

This happened with a friend’s child. He was referred to a physio as he was developmentally behind and given exercises to do. They really helped and he caught up. Now, at 2yrs old, you’d never know his history. I’d speak to your GP as a little extra support might make all be difference.
