Nearly 6 month old rolling - hard floor

We’ve been staying with the in-laws for the last 3 weeks and in that time my LO’s rolling and creeping has come on loads. They have large rugs and carpets which have been great for him to roll around on. I’m going home soon to our small house which has very little empty floor space and all hard floors downstairs - tiles in the kitchen / diner and wood in the living room.

I’ve been toying with the idea of getting some soft flooring - the totter and tumble type stuff- for him to roll around / crawl on. I’m thinking it might be a bit of a waste of money as once he really gets going, he’s not going to restrict himself to that area. Has anyone done something else for the in between stage where their baby is moving off the play mat but still bashing their head on the floor when they roll? Am I overthinking this? It’s just the tiles in particular are so hard, I’m worried about him getting hurt.

We have all wood floors and tiles in the kitchen and bought some foam tiles. If you can afford it, get expensive ones! We have some SkipHop ones and also some cheaper ones and you can definitely feel the difference. We still have them down now that he’s nearly two as it’s much nicer for him to sit and play on them that the wooden floors. Rugs are a bit annoying to play on as they’re bumpy - not great for puzzles and train tracks - and also it made so much fluff when he was in the crawling and scorching stage.

The Totter and Tumble mats are gorgeous (but expensive)! That’s true about rugs being bumpy for train tracks and puzzles though, I hadn’t really considered that.

I bought the foam puzzle pieces from Amazon for about seven quid. Perfect for a hard floor, and has saved my DD from bumps for months (she's 8mo now)

We bought about a million foam tiles. They're not really necessary now but still in place.

I have a totter & tumble mat & honestly it's the best thing I ever brought! My little one is 12 months now & although it's well & truely on the move- still absolutely uses it! Also when it becomes impossible to change a nappy without crawling away- it's like 1 giant changing mat! Honestly it's brilliant & 100% worth the money IMO!

Love my totter and tumble play may wish I’d had it with my first. It’s so lovely to sit on and play with the big one, great for baby, doesn’t matter if anything gets spilled etc.

Great for yoga too

Aldi had foam puzzle flooring in the other day for only £6.99. I bought some for my 5 month old as all floors downstairs are either wood or flagstones so not ideal for rolling, crawling or falling on.

You’ve all talked me round 😊 I’ve ordered some Totter & Tumble samples.
