Salt/ Sodium intake confusion???

hi everyone, sorry if this post seems like I'm overthinking but I am so confused about sodium and salt intake in infants.

My dd has been on solids for 2 months now and I do try and be conscious about the salt intake and make sure it's 1g or under.

However, i have just realised that I haven't been factoring in the sodium that's in her milk. There is 0.0219g of sodium per 100ml which is about 0.05g of salt per 100ml, and she has about 800ml a day so that's about 0.4g of salt before food. So is it 1g salt on top of that or should I only be giving 0.6g salt in her food a day? Seems impossible when a slice of bread has 0.33g salt.

Very worried that I've now been giving her too much salt on a daily basis without realising as I didn't realise the salt content in the milk was so high!!

I think you should be looking at added salt rather than worrying about naturally occurring sodium in milk. No need to overthink things

@dementedpixie OK, ill try not to stress, thanks!

Bread, especially industrial / supermarket bread or from chains such as Paul are notoriously high in salt.
Like PP said, keep an eye on the added salt in any label, if salt is listed, you better leave it on the shelf.
Doing your own bread or your DD's bread is really easy, maybe give it a try this weekend?

Focus on the food, not the milk

@LeGrandBleu I might give that a go, thanks for the tip! What about things like eggs? She loves them but they seem to have high sodium levels as well which i also didn't realise! I feel like I've been doing it all wrong!

But the sodium in eggs is naturally occurring. Its added salt you look at. Eggs are a good food to give

SquareBoxHead · 27/08/2020 10:21

@dementedpixie so glad you said that because she demolishes a spinach omelette quite a few times a week!

It’s added salt, not naturally occurring salt. So, salt in bread/pasta sauce/cheese etc you would count. Sodium in milk/water/eggs etc you don’t need to.

Basically if salt is listed in the ingredients keep an eye on it. Sodium is necessary for the body, tons of added salt is where the problems lie.

@TeddyIsaHe brill, thank you!

It’s tricky but bread, beans and cheese are big suspects so just don’t go OTT on them.
