Travelling after c section

Expecting a planned c section in late November, also have a Christmas holiday with family booked which is around a 3/4 hour drive. Thankfully DH will be driving and I would have a pillow between my scar and the seatbelt. Is it sensible to think that will ok a month post section or would you wait longer before long distance travel?

After a month you should be ok. Might need a break half way through. You'll need to stop with the baby anyway.

I was fine after a week

Hi OP,
Every C section is different of course but I think you’ll be absolutely fine. A month is a decent amount of time and I found a C section about 100 times quicker to recover from than the difficult natural birth I experienced first time round. Best of luck with it all.

Bare in mind that newborns shouldn't be in the car seat for more than an hour at a time though, and you'll be doing well if you can get them to go that long between feeds/changes anyway. It may well be a horrific journey even if you are well enough to be sat in the car.

I drove my car after 4 days but know this is inadvisable. I was up and about fine. I think the more you move around the better soong as you also rest. It will be more about tiredness and managing a newborn in the car imo.

I did a 2 hour round trip at 4 days and didn't even think about my section, it wasn't an issue.

It’s not safe to travel with a pillow between you and the seat belt. Babies under 6 weeks are advised to be in the car seat for only 30 mins at a time. If you are planning on breast feeding then you may need to feed for up to an hour at a time and then you will need to move round because you are at increased risk of DVT. Personally I wouldn’t have enjoyed a holiday at that point because I was trying to establish breast feeding and both my babies had allergy issues which we were trying to figure out and were very sickly.

Totally depends on your recovery.

Personally if have been so knackered I would have hated this idea. Just getting used to being a parent and then taking everything somewhere else (and inevitably forgetting stuff) would be not fun.

As PPs have said, that much car time isn't ok for newborns. The journey could end up taking up the best part of a day. Lie flat car seats are a bit safer for longer periods.

It really does vary though. I went abroad for a holiday 6 weeks after my section and it was a fab week in the sun. I appreciate its not for everyone, but you will get a lot of people being gloomy about the idea of a holiday with such a young baby, but IMO, it's the easiest time to holiday with children!
