13mo keeps getting ill and nursery

I went back to work in June and DS is in nursery (I'm a keyworker). DS has had a temp in the 38s three times in 11 weeks, which means he is excluded until we all get a covid test, and obviously I can't work until I have a negative test too. This is totally reasonable but so tricky with work, I like almost every other week is disrupted.

I suppose I'm hoping to hear he will get more resilient and less attractive to viruses magically by tomorrow.

Any ideas for managing this?

Sorry to hear this but ime, this is entirely normal. My DD started nursery in May last year (I'm a teacher) and the final 3 months of school we're peppered with nursery caking to ask for me to collect her due to high temperatures.

When they first join nursery they literally pick up everything going - we had quite a few eye infections, runny noses and simply high temperatures for no apparent reason! Our nursery won't administer calpol without the child being collected! It was annoying pre-covid and I can only imagine is much worse now due to need the negative test. It takes time for their little immune systems to be exposed to the germs and then built up. It does get better but not for a little while.

My DD loves going to nursery and gets so much out of it!

Good luck!

Same. My twins were constantly ill with colds, coughs, croup, conjunctivitis. It does get slightly better after they’ve been there a while but then it starts again when new kids/germs come in.
They’ve just missed a week with a cold and had to wait for a covid test (negative)
Sympathetic employers is the only way to manage it really.

Same here. She was constantly ill for what felt like an age when she started but was probably more like 6 weeks. She is much more robust now though - no fevers yet after returning in June (touch wood!).

Same and following! DS 16mo started in July (was supposed to have started in April) and we are in a cycle of him going for a few days, getting ill, having to have a covid test, going back for a few days, getting ill, covid test etc etc. It’s painful. Also exhausting as he doesn’t sleep well when he’s poorly. He’s currently on my knee watching cocomelon and eating breadsticks as he won’t eat anything else. I’m supposed to be at work today.
Ironically I reduced my work hours temporarily to make it easier but he’s been ill on all my working days this week!!! DH took yesterday off so that I wasn’t an entirely hideous work colleague.
Understanding employer and work mates is the only way!!

Shit - I hadn’t thought of this, that because of COVID they will get sent home with a temp and have to isolate, I’m due to go back off mat leave in a few months.

OP my first was constantly ill (and then past it on to us) for a good six months after starting nursery, it was so hard and I feel for you. X

I vividly remember being in your position, DS literally ill with temperatures every month and he'd take ages to get over one ailement only to have a few weeks at best before going down with the next. It also made it very hard for us with work and nursery. He's nearly 3 now, I'd say by his second birthday he was getting them much less and now I can't tell you the last time he was ill.
