Prep Machine

Hey Ladies,

I'm a FTM and my baby is 2 week old and I decided last night that I would give my prep machine a go as I was told it was the best thing ever and would massively help with the night feeds.

My little girl has been a good sleeper through the night (in a moses basket) since getting home from the hospital. Going from 9-12 12-3 3-6 and 6-8ish on 3oz bottles in between. But last night she just would not settle. She cried, screamed and kept arching her back. We winded her, changed her regularly, fed her, sang to her, cuddled her literally everything and she must of had about 20 minutes sleep and she'd only do it in my OH arms laid in bed with us. So safe to say we haven't had any sleep. She's been whiney this morning but she's settled in her car seat and pram when we've gone out for a drive and walk but she's still abit whiney when it comes to feeding her.

Could it be the prep machine? I haven't changed anything else and even had her in at the doctors and they've said eveything is perfect with her. No temp and couldn't hear anything on her chest. And he didn't think it was colic or reflux.

I'm not going to use it now as I'm petrified I've done something to hurt her. Anyone else find this to happen?

I'm gutted as it did really help and I know alot of people haven't had any problems with them.

Happy Wednesday xxx

My baby is 6 weeks and found that after the 2 week mark, she did get fussier and more particular about how she falls asleep. When she was 1-2 weeks old she would fall asleep anywhere, now she will only fall asleep while being rocked or swaddled. I ended up buying the swaddle wraps and she falls asleep great in them with a dummy. I have been using the perfect prep from 1 week and had no problems.

I very much doubt its the prep machine. Babies change the whole time. Baby sleep changes at the click of a finger, so id be more inclined to believe its developmental change.

We just got one. DS is 10 weeks. Honestly saving my sanity as DH does long 24hr+ shifts and with a velcro baby it's hard to get the bottles done in advance. I was always in a state of anxiety that I wouldn't get a chance to make one before he got really hungry .
I haven't noticed any difference in him so far. One or two extra dirty nappies one day but I think its was a coincidence as it's been normal ever since. The only thing is it seems to create a lot of bubbles so make sure the bottles you are using are anti colic to help with this. They all seem to be anti colic these days anyways. It could just be making her a little bit more windy or it's just a coincidence. Like PP said around that mark my DS also became a lot discernable about where he slept and was a little fuss pot.

I wouldn't think it was the prep machine to be honest. I always switched between kettle boiled and Prep machine bottles and never had a problem. Hope she settles down again soon

I very very very much doubt its the prep machine.

Both of my DS became super fussy around that age. It just takes time for them to adjust.

As long as you’ve set the machine up as per instructions it will be fine.

It sounds more like colic or reflux. I’d be trying to change to anti colic bottles, use infacol etc and see if that helps

If not get back to the gp as if it’s reflux she needs infant gaviscon to start with.

Lalapurple · 20/08/2020 14:24

It's probably a growth spurt as everyone says.

But Perfect Prep machines aren't recommended by the NHS> There is guidance linked on this page that explains why so you can make an informed decision. www.firststepsnutrition.org/making-infant-milk-safely

2 week mark is also when colic can kick in. If you are using the same formula it will be the same whether made by prep machine or kettle.

It won’t be the prep machine - please don’t worry, you haven’t done anything to harm baby!

We found that baby had gas pain to start with because when we shook the bottle to mix it, we were making loads of air bubbles in the formula! So now we keep a spoon in the steriliser and use that instead of shaking - problem solved!
