Sun got in baby's eyes

I've been trying really hard to keep my DS (4 months) in total shade at all times. I know the advice to not expose babies to direct sunlight until they're six months and I'm really nervous about him getting burnt and damaging his skin.

Anyway, the other day we were walking along a (shaded) pavement when I turned a corner and the sun momentarily shone direct into his eyes. It was literally a split second as he closed his eyes pretty much immediately and kind of frowned. I then put a muslin over the pram to cover him for a few mins while we were in the direct sun.

It's now four days later and he seems completely fine, but should I be concerned about this? I'm kicking myself for not being more aware of the position of the sun...

Oh gosh no, my DD's were born in Cyprus and had burning sun in their eyes momentarily (or longer sometimes) every single day! They are 7 and nearly 11 now and one has 20/20 vision the other one better than.

icedaisy · 18/08/2020 20:47

It is @ShagMeRiggins And I'm sure one of the stories is dragging the pram backwards all the way home so sun didn't go in babies eyes.

Seriously OP, baby will be fine, most of us have these moments of anxiety. I have loads.

AnAchos · 18/08/2020 20:47

OP re babies not being exposed to direct sunshine, how do you think we survived for millennia....?

Is the PFB thread in Classics still? Worth a look, OP.

I will have a look for this, thank you Grin

The NHS advice is meaning don't go out sunbathing all day with small children.

Unless your son is a vampire its fine for them to be momentarily bathed in sunlight, healthy even, if you take vitamin d requirements into account.

ShagMeRiggins · 18/08/2020 21:08

icedaisy my favourite was the mum who admitted driving to A&E and using paid parking before introducing any new food to her Precious First Born. It was marvellous, and—as stated—most of us have been there.

One moment, big belly; next moment, tiny human being that you must keep safe and alive.

Daunting transition.

UmmH · 18/08/2020 21:10

@Wecumasathree
Do people worry about this in the rest of the world - eg Cuba?
I'm sure they're not worried about it in Cuba. It's one of the go-to health tourist destinations for ophthalmology Grin

dementedma · 18/08/2020 21:13

Seriously?

SillyUnMurphy · 18/08/2020 21:13

DD1 was born jaundiced and I was told by the obstetrician to sit with her by the sunniest window as much as possible (bit difficult as she was born mid-December).

CatToddlerUprising · 18/08/2020 21:18

Agree with PP- please do not put anything over the pram like a blanket or muslim, it can be just as dangerous as keeping a dog locked in a car

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 18/08/2020 21:22

Or even a muslin

iamtheoneandonlyyy · 18/08/2020 21:22

Whoops! Grin

DoodleMcNoodle · 18/08/2020 21:25

There was a thread pretty much the exact same story and concern about 10 seconds of sunlight in a baby's eyes a few days ago Hmm

Surely there are not more people concerned about this Confused

dalrympy · 18/08/2020 21:30

Also had a baby with jaundice and they said to keep her in the sunlight as much as poss.

I also used to turn the pram into the sun when she was fighting sleep so she had to close her eyes.

Appears to have survived ☺️

BIRDSbirds · 18/08/2020 21:30

He will be absolutely fine. This is one of the things eyelids are for! It's a good idea to keep little babies in the shade when it's very hot as their skin is delicate, but a few mins here or there won't hurt. And dont worry on cooler days, that NHS advice relates to hot weather.

Are you ok though? You seem very anxious about a very small thing. I hope you have enough support.

icedaisy · 18/08/2020 21:31

@ShagMeRiggins yes! I think mine was the lady who climbed inside the pushchair and made her husband put the rain cover on and then hose it to see if it was waterproof. Still makes me smile, genius.

OP do you want me to hijack more and we can all tell you stories of the things we have done, and in my case are still doing.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 18/08/2020 21:33

Off the back of this i've just looked up some PFB threads. My fave so far - the woman who sat outside A+E whilst she fed her baby peanut butter for the first time.

Im a FTM, and ive had my moments. I remember in the early days taking maybe 5 or 6 dummies with me wherever I went because whenever a dummy fell out of my DS's mouth and touched ANYTHING else, id deem it unclean and give him a new one. Im lolling at myself.

Todaywewilldobetter · 18/08/2020 21:33

He just blinked. He'll be ok. Grin

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 18/08/2020 21:35

I literally had a full pouch of dummies. Im lolling.

terriblyangryattimes · 18/08/2020 21:58

Don't worry about it. We used a sun screen thing that was designed for thr purpose as it was breathable and UV protective. Attached to the pram with velcro straps I think, from memory. Certainly made naps last a lot longer when out in the buggy too! It's called a Snoozeshade I think.

ShagMeRiggins · 18/08/2020 22:00

icedaisy we are clearly on the same page.

I’ve tried and failed to find the PFB thread in Classics—there is probably more than one thread—but the wealth of admissions is a thing to behold, and so reassuring for first-time mothers/parents.

Pinkypie86 · 18/08/2020 22:06

Sunglasses?

00100001 · 18/08/2020 22:20

@Pinkypie86

Sunglasses?
She'll spend her entire time putting then back on 😂
pinktophat · 18/08/2020 22:24

I am really giggling at, unless he's a vampire he'll be ok!!!

OP this is funny in a really sweet way. Honestly in a few years you will really laugh at this thread.
