What does your 9 month old eat in a day?

Or ages 6-12 months in general. I'm really worried we're not feeling him enough. He has lots of breastmilk still and we do breakfast, lunch and dinner at the same time as us (baby led weaning). I feel like so many things we eat don't work though e.g. stir fry is often still too hard for him with only 2 front teeth. I also worry about salt content and getting enough of everything into his diet.
A lot of it goes on the floor and then I can't work out how much to keep on giving him? Do you just keep putting more food on until he stops putting any in his mouth? When do you start snacks? I feel like he'd live off fruit if we let him.
Also how do you know when they're hungry of food instead of milk?

It would be great to get some reassurance from others.

Today was
Breakfast: weetabix (mostly on floor) and some nectarine
Lunch: hummus, pita, falafel and then some berries and more weetabix as everything had either been eaten or on the floor.

I was going to do more veg for dinner ans maybe some eggs?

What portion sizes do you use?

Woke up 0630 - boob
First breakfast - mini hot cross bun
Second breakfast (around 10am) porridge with stewed berries and full fat greek yoghurt - about half a generous adult portion

Lunch - one melty stick, half an Ella's pouch (thai curry - Stage 3), piece of lardy cake (which didn't get eaten).

Snack - decent portion of full fat Greek yoghurt.

Dinner is going to be lightly blended chicken dinner (chicken, green beans, roast sweet pots), some bit of whole fruit (maybe nectarine), probably another melty stick and more greek yoghurt. When it's been hot and he wouldn't eat much he had the Ella's kitchen squashed fruits to keep him hydrated.

He is breastfed on demand plus water plus fed to sleep at nap times and I will bf anything between 1 and 4 times a night.

Food is a bit funny atm as he is teething. He eats far more than I would ever predict for his size!

Seven months here and started weaning at five months. Combo fed formula and breast.

Today:

Bf morning
2nd Buttle feed 2.5 hours later
Mid morning breakfast chia seed pudding - just water soaked seeds to go gloopy, with yoghurt, figs and some prunes and Banana.
3rd bottle early afternoon
4th bottle/boob early eve
Dinner- song boo pouch with homemade mash pots, and greens all mashed up together. Two melty sticks and a couple of segments of tangerine.

I don’t rely on baby led for nutrition. He can bosh toast and sticks and biscotti and a bit of banana but I don’t assume those go in. I spoon feed porridge, oats, yoghurt, pouches, mashed versions of our dinner- and I let him take the spoon and feed himself say, 1 in 3 mouthfuls. That way I know what he has eaten and he still gets to play with veggies etc which, as far as I can see, is mainly what happens at the mo. Will def keep giving pieces of chicken etc and see how that goes as he gets older.

He hasn’t really reduced number of feeds but sometimes reduces how much he drinks at each one. I’ve read it takes a while for calories to match boob/formula so to keep milk as primary until 12 months at least.

Update - ended up having chilli, melty sticks and half a nectarine. Now having more boob. Like @Angliski I do a mix of spoon feeding and self feeding but DS would starve to death if I didn't spoon feed some things! I did the same with my oldest and he eats everything!

No idea about how many calories he gets from milk, but we were dropping down the centiles and referred to the dietician to wean early. We weaned mainly on to peanut butter!

Hi. This is an interesting thread! For those giving weetabix - how many would your baby eat for breakfast say? My 7.5 month chomps 1.5 which is nearly an adult portion and worried is too much. OP this is my day...

6 am 7oz bottle
9.30 breakfast of weetabix or porridge and fruit purée
12 noon 3 oz bottle
2.30 ‘lunch’ either mashed up pasta, risotto, baked beans etc
6pm tea will be slice of toast, 1/2 banana or generally finger food.

She’s a right little chunk 😍

Gettingonabitnow · 16/08/2020 18:16

Oh and 7oz bottle at 10pm

Easylikesunday · 16/08/2020 18:26

Breakfast yogurt and berries, lunch either egg ham , cheese or squash/ sweet potatoes dinner - it can be what he had for lunch or fruit or a sandwich. He snacks on apple/ banana/strawberries about twice a day

Asasmomhasgotitgoingon · 16/08/2020 18:52

Our 11 month old LOVES his food.
645 - bottle, 7oz
800 - breakfast - purple porridge (made with berries and whole milk)
1130 - 12 lunch today was mini falafel, some beef and potato stew, fromage frais,
3 - bottle, 7oz
530-6 parsnip puffs, fish pie, yoghurt, half a plum
7ish bottle.
He sleeps through most of the time, but every so often will wake up for a bottle at 3. He's crawling everywhere so eating a lot more

Asasmomhasgotitgoingon · 16/08/2020 18:55

Should add, to start off with I fed him small amounts of different things to pick at. He soon dropped them over the side when he didn't like something or was full.

bloodywhitecat · 16/08/2020 19:04

Today my 9 month old has had

06.30/07.00 240mls milk

Breakfast - Multigrain cereal, a splosh of cows milk and a quarter slice of toast and marmite/peanut butter

Snack - a banana and some blueberries

Lunch - a crumpet (cut into three fingers, the middle finger ended up on the floor) and some cucumber sticks followed by a yogurt

Snack - some melon fingers

Dinner - Roast gammon, new potatoes, carrot fingers and sweetcorn followed by banana custard

18.30 240mls milk.

He sleeps through the night now so is probably a bit light on baby milk, I need to speak to the HV tomorrow about our 4 month old flipping on to his tummy in the nigh so will ask her if I should swap him to a follow-on milk.

(I foster hence the closeness in age)

Lelophants · 16/08/2020 19:29

How do you all know when to give snacks as opposed to milk? I understand it may be different with bf. I wonder if I should offer more solids now!

I didn't take a very scientific approach...I offered bottles but mine lost interest in milk apart from at his set times. He's had quite bad reflux so I think solids were a relief for him. He is always interested in fruit / snacks!
GrumpyHoonMain · 16/08/2020 19:41

My 8 mo is cruising and using a walker so we give 3 meals (he self-feeds) plus snacks. Plus breastfeed on demand

breakfast - porridge with a cup of full fat milk mixed in, fruit, some full fat greek yohurt. Or one scrambled egg with wholemeal toast and plain natural yoghurt

Lunch - fruit selection. A collection of finger sandwiches made 2 slices of bread. Or leftovers from the previous night’s dinner.

Snacks - crackers and cheese. Or the ella’s melty sticks.

Dinner - Indian potage / spag bol / roti with dal / cheesy veg bake / a baby appropriate version of what we have.

We also give him baby vitamins on top.

If your son is mobile then just add more meals or snacks without worry. If he’s not or he doesn’t enjoy his food then you could maximise calories in every bite by coating / stirring in things like peanut butter / full fat dairy products / olive oil / chia seeds / avocado /mango.

My HV told me not to go with age but whether they are cruising or not. So cruisers / Early walkers get snacks, while the babies who are still only crawling. By about 12 months most babies are, if not cruising, then pulling themselves up or about to so should get snacks really.

My 6 month old has had

Breakfast 1 small slice of peanut butter on bread

Lunch carrot and sweet potato puree and some of my homemade potato salad

Dinner plain egg omelette and broccoli

Some spoon fed some baby led. I do struggle with meals sometimes because I dont want to give meals with high salt content or things lacking in nutrition!

The milk drinking has not really gone down very much but I tend to offer a boob (and he is getting better at "asking" by grabbing my top!). If he isn't very interested but is still a bit whingy, and has a clean bum I presume he is hungry and offer a snack. He is also very keen to "share" (eat most of) my food...
Cat14123 · 16/08/2020 21:44

Babies can live solely on breastmilk till they are 1 according to my health visitor so I think it's more about nutrition at this age instead of qualities.

My 8 month old has breakfast, Cheerios/shreddies or/& toast. (she steals her 2 year old brothers toast, usually he gives her his crusts)
Lunch is usually whatever her brother is eating, cheese spread sandwich/beans/spaghetti/ crackers/ humous & veggie sticks.
Dinner is again whatever we have for dinner - sausage casserole, fajitas, curry, stew, spaghetti, stir fry.

She has breast milk in between meals.
Baby lead weaning has really worked for us this time, she's a great eater and there's no texture she can't manage. We had the opposite with our son who would choke on anything with the slightest lump till he was nearly one.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 16/08/2020 21:51

My twins are 7.5 months, breastfed and I started weaning a couple of months ago. Today they ate:
7ish Breastfeed
8ish 1 x Weetabix with milk, yoghurt & apple purée (shared), plus a baby biscuit each
11ish Snack - fruit pouch
Midday Strawberry pancakes with some cream cheese (ate about 2 each, drop scone size); shared a fruit & yoghurt pouch
2ish Breastfeed
5pm Chicken, potato & pea purée - about 1/2 cup between them, then apple purée mixed with full fat milk and crushed baby biscuit
6ish Breastfeed
10ish Breastfeeding again now! Dreamfeed

I mix spoon feeding and soft finger foods. BLW is a messy faff IMHO. As for dropping feeds, I follow their lead. Most recently, I replaced 11am feed with a snack because they were only feeding for a couple of minutes, clearly not hungry.

BillyAndTheSillies · 16/08/2020 22:05

Nearly 11 months DS2 -

Bottle around 6am (mainly to try to convince him to sleep for another hour)
8am - breakfast with DS1, either toast with almond butter; crumpets with mashed banana, scrambled egg and avocado or weetabix.
10am - snack would be some breadsticks, fruit or melty sticks
11:30-12 - lunch, half an ella's pouch with rice plus fruit and Greek yoghurt or finger food like fish cakes or pizza made at home
3pm - post nap snack of fruit, biscuits or yoghurt
4:30-5pm - dinner, other half of ella's pouch mixed with baked potato or pasta stars, or he may have what I've cooked for DS1 - an omelette, spaghetti bolognese, mild curry, a roast, macaroni cheese etc. Yoghurt or homemade BLW friendly cake for dessert.
7pm - night time bottle

If we are out and about during the day he will eat whatever I'm eating. We did purely BLW with my eldest but he's not fussed by food, DS2 needs to be fed because he was getting so frustrated and hungry when BLW. So now we do a mix with him.

got an excellent book called Young Gums - it has some fantastic recipes that are very nutritious and sugar and even gluten free @Lou2120 - plus the ingredients can all be measured using one hand - very useful if you have a baby on hip! I like it because it introduces lots of tastes and flavours - we eat round the world here and I want him to enjoy a wide range of foods.

Here's the link.

It has 100 five stars and i can totally see why! Love it. Like the banana and oat biscuits featuring - banana and oats only. So quick and yummy.

He has slept through since 3 months, so I don't feed overnight, but he does have a good appetite. I try not to worry about portion size except for things like biscotti, where i would only give him one a day. He can devour a whole pouch if he likes something. The other day he had an Ella banana pudding and licked the bowl, shouting in distress that it was gone.

cautionhot · 17/08/2020 04:13

Bottle in the morning
8:30 weetbix with milk or fruit
10am bottle
11:30am veggies and tuna or similar. Baby rice sticks or biscuits
2:30pm bottle
5pm dinner. Combination of our dinner mashed up, with finger food like carrot or strawberries.
7pm bottle

cautionhot · 17/08/2020 04:19

Looking at others I'm thinking I should offer more food
