Potty training - introducing pants

Started potty draining DS this week. (He's almost 3). We've had nappy free time when ever we've been at home and he's learnt when he needs to go. I thought we'd move on to the next stage today, so introduced a pair of pants (as opposed to naked from the waist down). Within 2 minutes of having them on he'd had an accident. He was really upset as it's the 1st one this week. Should i persevere with the pants or wait a bit longer? He is now refusing to put a clean pair on, so don't want to create a negative association Confused

We followed "oh crap" so did bare bum then trousers/shorts and then introduced underpants. Few accidents in the trousers on the first day of wearing those but went into underpants two weeks later with no problems at all.

I second no underwear for a few weeks and if it’s easier for now just wear clothes when out of the house.

Thank you both. i'll look up 'oh crap' not heard of that!

Same here. We followed the Oh Crap method and I don’t think we added pants down a few weeks. Apparently they can cause “muscle memory” which feels like wearing a nappy. Also it’s quicker and easier for kids to only have to get down trousers in the beginning, pants are quite fiddly.

mommybear1 · 15/08/2020 19:53

Agree with above posters - oh crap is great I got mine second hand definitely recommend 👍🏻

HarrietM87 · 15/08/2020 19:57

As above, did Oh Crap with DS and he was commando for a few weeks and then added pants with no issues.

Lockdownseperation · 15/08/2020 19:57

The oh crap method is great if you ignore the stuff about overnight

HarrietM87 · 15/08/2020 20:22

Yes agree on ignoring overnight - who wants to wake their child up to get them to wee?!

DaisyChainsForever · 15/08/2020 21:34

Thank you everyone, will add shorts instead tomorrow and see how we get on. I think you're right @FizzingWhizzbee123 he thought the pants were like a nappy 🙈

Yes, we ignored the overnight stuff too, but the day method worked well.

Good luck tomorrow OP!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 15/08/2020 22:02

Just to add, if you think nappy/pants confusion is a fact, you could try boxers instead of pants when you do add them?

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 15/08/2020 22:02

*factor

Why wait till 3 to potty train? Its bizzare. All children in my family were potty trained by 15 months and there are a ton, earliest 9 months.

Hahaha

Another wirh huge success following’oh crap’ method here. We did commando for a bit and then introduced boxers instead and never looked back. If you do look up the method don’t necessarily discount the night bit as suggested by some PPs as we trained DS at 2 yr 7 months day and night and never had a single night accident from day 1. We did a dream wee type thing when we went to bed for a few weeks and it worked a treat.

Caterina99 · 16/08/2020 03:17

My DD trained in lockdown when she was 2.5 and she had to go without pants for a long time. Probably at least a week. And then we added loose trousers for a couple of weeks and then finally underwear. Any attempt in the early days and she’d just wet herself almost immediately, even though she was doing great when she was naked. (My DS, now 5, had none of these issues and wore pants straight away, so I was confused). I would’ve given up if we weren’t in lockdown and stuck at home anyway

However it’s been a few months now and I honestly don’t remember the last time she had an accident. She clearly just needed a bit more time and the muscle memory was strong

Overnight she’s still in pull ups though. I’m not dealing with that any time soon
