3 month old exposed to sun - advise

Hi. I am a mom of a 3 month old bay and still learning things everyday. Today i took him out to park around 10:30 and walked on shades. While walking here and there by mistake he is been exposed to sun (10-15 seconds) and he closed his eyes. Also while coming home from park while crossing the road he is exposed again. (10-20 sec)

Will this harm my baby? Do i have to apply any cream?

Also i tried the sunshade cover but he doesn't like it and started crying. Any advise pls?

He will be fine, tiny bit of vitamin D for him!

Moreisnnogedag · 13/08/2020 11:43

He will be absolutely fine. Everyone including babies need a bit of sun.

Do you have much support? That’s a bit of anxiety over what is in essence an everyday thing.

toomanyplants · 13/08/2020 11:47

Ahh he will be ok, and he will get used to the shade
Don't worry

So you are saying less than a minute in total? That will do no harm. Don't worry
If you want your baby shaded though could you try a pram umbrella?

BertieBotts · 13/08/2020 11:52

It is perfectly OK for him to be in the direct sun for a while at 10.30am. Even about an hour or so should be fine unless it is very hot. Even if it is very hot, a few minutes would be no problem. You don't need to count the seconds. :)

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 13/08/2020 11:53

Its fine

Cutesbabasmummy · 13/08/2020 11:54

He will be fine. Kids are now getting tickets because they arebt getting enough vitamin d. I'm.nkt advocating not using sunscreen at all but a bit of sun is good for you and babies!

Metallicalover · 13/08/2020 11:55

Buy an umbrella for the pram. It doesn't obscure the baby's view or your view.
Have you got any support around you? Your post sounds as though your very anxious. I thought the post was going to say 10-20 minutes. A few seconds here and there is normal, a good dose of vitamin D x

BertieBotts · 13/08/2020 11:57

I wouldn't even get the umbrella things as they are useless, need adjusting constantly and fall off IME!

AriettyHomily · 13/08/2020 12:01

You do sound very anxious op. Seconds are really really not going to matter. He closed his eyes because it was bright I would imagine.

atvh · 13/08/2020 12:26

It is perfectly OK for him to be in the direct sun for a while at 10.30am.

Is that the case? I read that babies shouldn’t be exposed to any direct sunlight until they’re six months. That said OP, a few seconds won’t make any difference at all - your LO will be absolutely fine!

Marpan · 13/08/2020 12:35

My 8 week old Was on beaches in Florida and is Just fine.
Sun lotion is not recommended but you are allowed apply child safe lotion and wash it off when you go inside so it Doesn’t seep into the skin. Keep the child under a shaded umbrella if u don’t want to do this. Also there are baby sunglasses on Amazon they are so cute.

Eshaar · 13/08/2020 13:25

Thanks all. Much relieved now.

I read posts saying we shouldn't expose babies under 6 to sun at all. But now relieved.

@Moreisnnogedag @Metallicalover - i recently moved to this place and have no friends here. Its just me and my husband. I am trying to find out any mom groups but no luck yet.

TBH even a slightest change on him worries a lot. Just wanted assurance if i am doing things right for the baby.

Thanks all

When they say not to expose them to sunlight, what they mean is to not leave them in the sun for prolonged periods - or be sensible about it. Use shade where it's hot and sunny, use a sunhat etc. But a bit of sunlight is fine - they aren't vampires, and bear in mind that people raise children in hot and sunny climates all the time.

We took our baby abroad at 6w, and whilst we used shade etc, obviously there would have been some sun. The guidelines are to protect people against being idiots, not to constrain everyday common sense activities.

FelicityPike · 13/08/2020 13:43

Sometimes you need to stop reading things and use a bit of common sense. A few seconds in the sun isn’t going to harm your baby and if you think about it, you know that!

Maybe you should think about speaking to your health visitor about your anxiety around your baby?

BertieBotts · 13/08/2020 14:11

Baby sunglasses are dangerous because they override the baby's instinct to choose their eyes against bright lights.

I haven't heard not to let them have any sun exposure under 6 months. Maybe it's new advice? If the NHS doesn't say so then I wouldn't worry about it.
