Tips on getting DD to stay asleep when put in cot?

My baby is almost 5 weeks old. The only way she will fall asleep is if I hold her or in her swing. She will usually go down easily during the day in her nest on the sofa (supervised only). Last night she would not stay asleep when I placed her in her cot, as soon as she's put down she's wide awake and fussing. Is there an easier way of transitioning her from my arms to the cot and getting her to stay asleep?

Are you putting her down too soon? I always told myself with my son - 'once you're sure he's asleep, go for 5 more minutes'.

Congratulations on your baby.

When mine was a newborn, the bedside crib was too big for them to sleep in, so they slept in the carrycot section of the pram (certified safe for overnight sleeping) until about 7 weeks when we moved to the bedside crib. It seemed to be connected to the startle reflex and there just being too much space around them (which makes sense if you think of how they are used to being in the womb).

My DS also had a mega startle reflex and he woke every time he was put in his cot. I learned a tight swaddle and he was much happier, he was about 4 months when he decided he wanted his arms free!
