Baby taking small feeds = no sleep

My baby is 16 weeks, 10 weeks corrected age if that's relevant. Her feeding has always been rubbish! Example: She was up at 3am for a feed. I made a bottle and she took only 60ml. She refused anymore. By the time it took me to change her (she pooped) and get her settled it was 4:40am as she kept crying but kept refusing the bottle. Now she's up crying again. Its making me nuts! I need to sleep and have another young child to look after so it's not like I can catch up on sleep in the day. If she would just take a whole bottle then I think she would settle down and have a decent sleep. She's on comfort milk at the moment as she was prone to reflux but this has improved. If anyone has any suggestions please share it before I lose my mind. I felt as though I had just dropped off before she started crying again and had that horrible dizzy sicky feeling when woken. I hate that feeling!

I could’ve written your post!

Just a thought but have you tried changing the teat on your bottle? Comfort formula is thicker and my dd exhausted herself sucking for very little milk resulting in smaller and more frequent feeds. Once I changed it to a faster flow it got much better (but still not perfect!)

It's awful isn't it?! I have her on Dr Brown's teat 3! So I don't think it's the teat but I wish it was! She's just taken 100ml this time compared to her 3am 60ml. She's had a cry and fallen asleep in my arms. I'm holding her upright for about 15 mins before I put her down then my other child will be up at 7am like clockwork. Argh!

Yup the heat is by no means helping! Will you have the opportunity to catch up on sleep today?

Right I've put her in bed and it's like "PING!" Eyes wide open and moaning in her bed. 😭 I'm leaving her hoping she'll settle and drop off...... wishful thinking huh! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

It's completely normal for them to feed every couple of hours at that age. But it may be a comfort thing though. Does your baby have a dummy?

mistermagpie · 12/08/2020 06:40

I would try a smaller teat again maybe? My baby is 9 months and is still on Dr brown level 2 teats! I've occasionally tried the larger but they left her windy and unsettled. No matter what kind of bottle you use they will take in some air, so it might be that the baby is taking in too much air and that's making them feel full and unsettled. To be honest I've bottle fed three babies and never used level three teats at all.

My second son was like this though, just never took much milk at all, and that was after me watching my first son tank big 7oz bottles! it's very frustrating so I know how you feel.

No chance of a sleep at all. Have two older dc and partner working from home

Dd13 also has her hpv jab today so that will be fun to deal with!

Oh no much more stressful when your DH is trying to work. I hope you're having a better night tonight

Thanks for your replies. She's on comfort milk which is thicker so she needs a bigger teat or she cannot get the milk. I wish that was it though! I've been up since 4:30 and this is the second time she's been up since midnight. 😫 however after 20 mins of her stirring I went downstairs and made a bottle and by the time it's cooled I've come back up and she seems to have settled 🤦🏽‍♀️

Oh I forgot to say, she won't take a dummy. I have a bag full of various dummy's trying to get her to have one as I think that would really soothe her but she always spits it out or freaks out when I offer it. Gutted!

If your partner is working from home, there's no reason surely he can't get up days, now, with baby, and give older child breakast at 7 andb then you come down before he needs to start at 9?

You don't get to have virtually no sleep and him all the sleep, that's unfair!

My DH works shifts and is a key worker. He still gets up to help but generally gets more sleep than me although he seems to be more tired 🤔 someone here mentioned their DH works from home though. I know what you mean, it isn't fair! My DH is very precious about his sleep and made such a fuss with DD1 that it was just easier for me to do everything. I'm hoping that doesn't happen this time round because I have no family around and no support and it almost killed me! It's good he is getting up though.
