8 week vaccination should I postpone?

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 01:56

Just after knowledgeable opinions please. 8 week old is due his first vaccinations tomorrow. I already cancelled them for last Friday as it was 30+ degrees. Was meant to be cooler this week but tomorrow is another hot day and I’m nervous he will get a fever which is hard to manage. I can’t keep him cool even without a fever despite constant feeding, no clothes and fans on.

Should I move it again? Or am I being over dramatic? How often do they really get a fever?

Thank you

I asked this question to the nurse doing my little boys jabs. She said they should not be postponed. Especially at the moment I would want baby vaccinated as soon as possible!

Lilybet1980 · 11/08/2020 07:56

Just proactively give calpol and they’ll be fine.

I have the 16 week vaccinations tomorrow and am wondering if I should postpone those.

Please don’t postpone them - if everyone does that then there won’t be enough capacity next week and you’ll also have to delay the next ones. It’s very short notice for an appointment to be cancelled and re-booked. Forecast looks like thunderstorms tomorrow which should cool us down :)
Also if it’s 2 or 4 months give paracetamol as soon as you get home. It is rubbish though - my 1 year old just had hers but at least we’re getting the heatwave and jabs over and done with and can look forward to next week.

Blizy · 11/08/2020 07:59

My 8 week old ds has her first
Injections yesterday. I gave the calpol as instructed and she has been fine, no temperature or upset.

Lockdownseperation · 11/08/2020 08:05

There is a big rise in people not vaccinating their children which means children are more at risk so I would definitely make sure you get them done this week.

m0therofdragons · 11/08/2020 08:12

People cancel vaccinations because it’s hot? Shock No, please vaccinate your dc based on medical opinion rather than that of FB. We don’t see dc with worse high temperatures in the summer than winter - a high temp is different to it being hot outside. We actually see worse in the winter. Most dc don’t even get a high temp after vaccines and if they do, one dose of calpol is all it takes.

Badabingbadabum · 11/08/2020 08:15

I didn't notice a fever with either of my dc at 8 week vaccinations, and that was without being able to get calpol into them.

glasgowgal6 · 11/08/2020 08:19

People cancel vaccinations because it’s hot?

I’m just a bit worried about my LO feeling under the weather in this stifling heat - it’s not a good combination. I don’t want him to be even more uncomfortable than he has to be! It’s so much cooler next week.

Zippy1510 · 11/08/2020 08:24

I would just get them done. It’s usually the Men and MMR that trigger the fever and I don’t think you get those yet.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/08/2020 10:15

I think just get them done. Its not a given that your LO will be unwell. Be proactive and give calpol and it'll more than likely be ok.

frolicmum · 11/08/2020 10:19

Most people on mumsnet will tell you to vaccinate. As a mother, I would 100% wait a week. If he wasn't born at 40 weeks, he's technically not even 8 weeks old (my opinion).

They are uncomfortable enough in this heat? Go next week.

Has everyone who gave that opinion checked if their vaccinations are up to date and if they weren't, would you go RIGHT now? I bet you haven't and I bet you won't lol. Very unpopular opinion but I couldn't care less. Xoxo

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 11/08/2020 10:38

@frolicmum why are you being so aggressive about it?!

Zippy1510 · 11/08/2020 11:17

Frolicmum- you can bet most of us have our young babies with weaker immune systems than adults all vaccinated up to date though...not wanting them to die from preventable infectious diseases and all.

Harrysmummy246 · 11/08/2020 11:28

I'd just vaccinate and get it done. Sorry. Especially if you've already postponed

NHS is busy enough

frolicmum · 11/08/2020 12:24

@Letsallscreamatthesistene didn't mean to be aggressive, just think that there is no point in even asking on here because everyone will tell you to vaccinate your child and I don't understand the difference one week really makes especially the circumstances we are in.

@Zippy1510 agreed but where do you actually go with your 8 week old baby at 30 degrees for them to catch one of those diseases. Probably nowhere and with corona on-going a lot more people carry anti bac and wash their hands more often.

There is nothing wrong with waiting 1 week in my opinion but again, this is my opinion and mine only. If these vaccines are that crucial why wait until they are 8 weeks, why not do it at birth, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 weeks. Why 8? I don't get it.

Zippy1510 · 11/08/2020 12:32

It’s 8 weeks because maternal immunity passed onto the newborn will start to wane. And if there’s no breastfeeding facilitating a boost in immunity via passing maternal antibodies in breast milk- then the baby starts to become vulnerable to these infectious diseases. Yes transmission rates are low at the moment due to the measures being taken against covid- but they aren’t non existent the risk is still there.

frolicmum · 11/08/2020 12:39

@Zippy1510 and I get it and I'm not an anti vaxxer, I just had an awful experience when mine was vaccinated for the first time, and I wouldn't want to go through it at 33 degrees and about 30 degrees in the house. We actually ended up in hospital with mine because he had a 41 degree fever, overnight stay and all.

& that doesn't mean this will happen to OPs baby but people are saying the NHS is busy enough, well - they were a lot busier because mine was vaccinated and due to side effects.

Again, not an anti vaxxer but I do believe it's ok to wait another week given the circumstances.

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 18:29

He had the jabs this morning and has now been out of sorts all day. Keep taking his temperature.

Stupid I should have listened to my instincts and postponed. I feel stupid putting him through this for no reason

I think potentially you're being a bit dramatic....

Dexy2020 · 11/08/2020 18:50

I think the heat in general is making all our babies a little out of sorts, as long as your taking his temperature and he's had some calpol I'm sure he will be just fine ❤️I'm sure tonight you will have a very sleepless night worrying and he will be sleeping away care free, it's happened to us all ❤️xx

frolicmum · 11/08/2020 18:52

@JKDcot You're not being dramatic! You're a fantastic mother but can't change it now. You just wanted the best for him and especially with vaccinations it can be difficult because as soon as you want to delay it a bit, you're getting flamed by so many.

Just be there for him, try to open all the windows so there is draft or however your house is set up. Ours is 30 degrees now but cools down to 26 in the night because the windows are open. If you have a fan, get that out. I find suppositories are better than calpol.

Keep taking his temperature and listen to his cues, you know him best. If you're breastfeeding, offer the boob more often so that he is well hydrated at all times. You got this mama! Sending lots of love and strengths x

Harrysmummy246 · 11/08/2020 20:42

It isn't 'for no reason'

You're protecting your child from several life threatening diseases.

They might have been out of sorts and hot even if it had been -10 outside

JKDcot · 11/08/2020 21:31

@frolicmum thank you so much for your kind message. I am not saying I wouldn’t vaccinate him. I was actually saying I would have done it in 2 days to avoid the heat. Not sure why people are being so mean about that comment.

Unfortunately I was so preoccupied with him I forgot to eat or drink enough today and with all the constant breastfeeding have had heat stroke and been sick all evening. So yes next time I will trust my instinct

You can put him skin to skin to help cool him down. Will make you hot but will help him
