The things you wish you never bought

As my baby is nearing a year old, I'm going through all the items I rarely (or in some cases, never) used for the baby's first year and am listing them for sale or for donations, where appropriate.

What items did you wish you had never bought for the baby? Or were gifted and are now having to re-gift/sell?

I'll start:

Play bouncer (you know, the ones that hang from the door frame). He didn't like it and it was a faff to get him in.

Baby björn bouncer. Yep, he didn't care for being bounced. I'm sensing a theme.

I was gifted some lovely White Company baby clothes but they had buttons instead of poppers along the inner leg. Whilst aesthetically pleasing, they were a pain to do up. So he literally only wore them once, photo was taken and then the item nicely folded away.

I agree anything with buttons. I didn't buy them but was given a lot as presents. It's just such a faff and I worry about them coming loose.

I was also given weather inappropriate stuff. He was born in spring and we live in a tropical climate yet I was given a ton of chunky jumpers, jackets and buggy suit things. Even putting them on for a photo, he was sweating!

My husband insisted on a changing table, we used it about twice.

we definitely need a nappy bin though, we live in a flat and no outside bin, it's only picked up once a week so it would stink to high heaven otherwise.

If we had an outside bin, I wouldn't bother

Bumbo- he didnt like it ditto the close canoe, baby horn carrier and the ergo baby carrier - he hated all of those and would rather be on his carry cot or pushchair!

Clothes with buttons on the back - for a baby under 6 months they are useless.
Play bouncer - never used it.
Snowsuits - we were given about 6 for a child under 6 months. Only 2 were used as the fastenings were too fiddly and they were too warm.
Baby gates - I got them before DD could crawl and they were recalled. Luckily I decided to get them delivered so Argos collected them all and refunded me all my money.
Expensive bottles - I got given new ones and brought other expensive ones to find out that DD like generic shop brand ones from Boots, Asda etc. As I mixed fed I didn't change the teats so she was still on newborn teats until she stopped
Jeans - just no for a child in nappies.

Snüzpod, sleepyhead

Sorry, pressed post too quickly on the last post. I shall continue......

Snuzpod, sleepyhead, crib - neither of my two would even entertain the idea. I ended up a reluctant co sleeper.
Gro Egg - Turns out I can tell if it’s hot or cold and my daughter chucked it on the floor and broke it as soon as she started grabbing.
Pramsuit - massive faff.

Mittens
Reusable nappies - tried very hard but they always leaked and I couldn’t ever get them dry.
Buggy - I had a buggy refuser. She walked or was carried. On the bright side she learned the walk next to me and keep up very quickly.
Bumbo

No regrets apart from breastfeeding stuff, as I wasn’t able to BF in the end. I also bought a few too many vests and other bits like that, which I haven’t used. There were other things we haven’t used too but I got them second hand so no money wasted. I’ll now be passing them onto friends who are pregnant.

I don’t see the point of a nappy bin personally - why don’t you just use the kitchen or bathroom bin? Confused

I didn’t have a Gro Egg but did have something similar. It had great reviews on Amazon but was totally pointless IMO!

All the stuff I bought in desperation to try and keep breastfeeding Sad so the lactation supplements, the hand pump, the Haaka, the hands free pump, the lactation tea. NONE of it worked, in fact, the stress of each one not working probably made the whole problem worse.

My bathroom bin would hold 2 nappies and be full. My kitchen bin is all the way downstairs and I really don’t want shitty nappies in it smelling for a few days before it’s emptied. A nappy bin in baby’s room means any smell is contained to that one room which isn’t used much in the day, and as the bin seals the nappies it doesn’t smell usually anyway. To me it’s easier to be able to dispose of dirty stuff right where it’s removed from baby rather than carrying it through the house whilst also carrying a baby 🤷‍♀️

Wheeliebug. Looked nice, but they always preferred plastic/metal scooters and trikes.

Bramblecrumble · 14/08/2020 18:12

Groegg. Me and dh disagreed on how many layers anyway. Egg showed too hot and he kept blanket on her like in hospital...I followed groegg website and tried to show him as evidence but I'd wake up and she'd be wrapped up too warm.

New2020 · 14/08/2020 18:41

@Bramblecrumble oh God that would seriously drive me mad. How did you keep your cool?! I know the baby is just as much his but I can't help but feel I'm her mum I know what's best
