When did your baby drop night feeds?

Hi everyone

My first baby was sleeping 9pm-8am by about 8 weeks.
My second baby is 10 weeks now and still feeding every 3 hours. She’s taking 6 or 7oz formula at the moment (was 50/50 breast and formula feeding but stopped the breast about 2 weeks ago). Her routine is generally that I will feed her at about 8/9pm and put her in her crib upstairs then when I go up at 11pm she’ll stir so I’ll give her a sleepy top up of as much as she will take (usually 4oz or so). Then she’ll wake for a normal 6/7oz feed at 2am, 5am and 8am. From 8am she’s very alert and we’re all up for the day and from then she’ll feed at 11am, 2pm, 5pm and then the cycle repeats.
I’m feeling quite put out as it’s very different from my first time when my baby had two night feeds for the first few days then one until 8 weeks and then she went for 11 hours through the night.
Is there anything I can do to help her along to dropping at least one feed if not both or is this normal?

Thanks

That is absolutely normal and you are expecting too much from a tiny baby. One of mine slept through with no feeds from 6 weeks another, had some milk in the night until almost 12 months but still woke until they were 3years old.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/08/2020 12:29

My baby is 19 weeks old and still has 1 or 2 night feeds. I cant see this changing anytime soon.

Ihaveoflate · 09/08/2020 13:32

5 months, but I am aware that is quite lucky and I was not expecting it so soon. It sounds like your expectations might be a tad optimistic and skewed by your experience of an unusual first baby (unusual in the sense that not many babies sleep through so early).

DS fed every 2 hours to the minute until 6 months
Still occasionally has a night feed now at 18 months

I'm shocked that you're expecting so much of a small baby

Temple29 · 09/08/2020 14:09

My DS fed every 2-3 hours until 8 weeks and then dropped one feed, the 10/11pm one. From 11 weeks he slept from 8pm until 4/5am.

Maybe don’t do the 11pm feed if it’s just a dream feed and not encouraging her to sleep longer? That way she might sleep until 2am and you can get a stretch of sleep.

Caspianberg · 09/08/2020 14:52

Mine is 14 weeks and wakes 1-2 times overnight still between 9-7am approx. So sometimes he will sleep 9-4am, feed, then 4.15-7am

However I see your only giving 3 bottles in your ‘daytime’ schedule. Baby is breastfed here, but between 7am-9pm he eats loads, every 1-2 hrs on average

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 09/08/2020 15:13

You got exceptionally lucky with your first baby, so drop those expectations now or you’ll just end up unfairly frustrated.

Mine went from multiple feeds down to one night feed around 6/7 months and had dropped that last night feed by 8 months. Tbh, I didn’t think that was too bad. I know people who’s kids are still waking multiple times a night past a year.

UnaOfStormhold · 09/08/2020 15:24

We night weaned at 23 months, had disturbed nights for 2.5 years beyond that.

zaffa · 09/08/2020 15:27

DD dropped night feeds about five months old but has recently (last couple of weeks) taken them back up again. I think it's a combination of weaning and a new formula for CMA that is very thin.
Regardless she doesn't sleep through - she has slept until maybe five am and woken up at her best (although goes back to sleep again) but currently wakes up constantly even if she is co sleeping and is usually up for the day around six to seven am. The night feeds have little impact on how late she will sleep or how early bed time is. She's 8 months old now.
You were very lucky with your first!

LividLaughLovely · 09/08/2020 17:36

Jesus. My 20 week old still feeds every couple of hours, but he’s in with me so just latches on half asleep.

I think your expectations are off.

Bitchinkitchen · 09/08/2020 17:38

9m DD feeds twice at night still. Your baby is very normal, but it does sound like he might not be getting enough to eat in the day.

Dexy2020 · 09/08/2020 18:15

My boy is just over 6 months old and still having 1 or 2 night feeds, just 1 more often than not ❤️xx

Leah00 · 09/08/2020 18:18

DD is 3.5 and sometimes still wakes up once or twice Smile

uglyface · 09/08/2020 18:27

6/6.30pm bedtime from five weeks and slept like a log until 1/2am, when she would have a bottle and again around 4/5am then up at 6ish. Dropped the 1/2am around weaning stage, then the 4/5am at around 12 months (the same week she started confidently walking and dropped to one nap).

Anecdotally, friends’ (FF) babies seemed to sleep through the night anywhen from around 6-9 months and mine was just a bit later. Possibly because she didn’t crawl, so wasn’t using as much energy until she walked.

She woke up/fed at the exact same times regardless of how early or late we put her to bed, so we chose to have our evenings to ourselves and go to bed slightly earlier!

Shelley54 · 09/08/2020 18:31

DS1 slept 12hrs from 6 months old. DS2 is 26m and still wakes 2/3 times a night. There is no rhyme or reason.

Nothankyou0 · 09/08/2020 19:32

Yes I did have a feeling my first set the bar too high 😂 I’m just so sleep deprived at the moment as I also have a painful back so it takes a while to get back to sleep after feeds.

DD1 was formula feed and dropped her last night feed at 13 months.
DD2 is nearly 13 months and has two breast feeds a night.

Lockdownseperation · 09/08/2020 20:01

To help prevent SIDS its recommended that all sleeps are in a room with an adult until 6 months. SIDS is on the rise in the U.K.

NickMarlow · 09/08/2020 20:02

Dd1 was sleeping 9pm-5am most nights by about 5 months. Dd2 was still on 3 feeds a night when I went back to work when she was 10 months!

fiadhflower · 09/08/2020 20:06

When my breastfed daughter had her 10-month check-up (she was closer to 11 months) the health visitor said she didn’t need night feeds anymore so I gradually stopped them. But she still wakes throughout the night at 19 months, usually 1-2 times. Sleep deprivation is a killer.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 09/08/2020 20:08

@lockdownseparation my god. If this is parroted one more time....

We know. And this thread has nothing to do with this.

Lockdownseperation · 09/08/2020 20:11

@Letsallscreamatthesistene but for some odd reason not everyone knows. I know a couple whose first child died from SIDS. Their baby would be 40 next year and not a single day goes by when they wonder what might have happened if they did something different. I really wouldn’t want anyone to go through that.

spiritedawai · 09/08/2020 20:17

2 in October and still has night feeds Grin

That's very sad, but it has jack shit to do with night feeds! Unnecessary derail.

Londongirl03 · 09/08/2020 20:30

My son (formula fed) slept through from 13 weeks 10-7 and so dropped all night feeds then x
