Potty training day 1 - take 17

3yo DS has started potty training (again!). We've tried a couple of times with lazy days at home using the potty every 15 minutes but by about this time getting him upstairs on the potty becomes a struggle and we've had a couple of accidents. Today is the same. We've never had a wee in the potty.

When not training he'll happily sit in a wet or dirty nappy all day. The only time he tells us he needs changing is early morning - because he knows it gets us out of bed before he's allowed up.

We're going to have some naked outside time soon so hopefully that will help but if he doesn't wee on the potty today do we wait again?

Will he ever be ready?!

Have you tried having him undressed from the waist down around the house? Also, get several potties so you don't have to go upstairs all the time. I did the cold turkey approach with my children, I just took the day time nappies away. Yes they had accidents, but they learned quickly.

We haven't tried that, we've had pantsless outside but inside accidents are with pants on. He's still not really noticing when he's had an accident either until we ask him.

The nappies are calling me, I'm ready to give up, DH is so frustrated too and it's starting to show. I don't want this to be an argument but I'd love him to start nursery in two weeks in pants!

He can still start nursery in pants, the other children will set an example and the routines will support the process. Ask the nursery staff for advice. Nurseries can be a massive help with potty training.

It may be detrimental if you stop again. No underwear if poss. You may have to observe him closely to check for signs he wants to go. You will get to recognise these. As soon as you see a sign put him on the potty. Even if he is mid wee, carry him to the pot. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Be constant and try to bear with it. You should see a massive improvement by day 3 or 4.

I'm starting potty training properly with my DS tomorrow, so going to follow this thread with interest!
We have a potty in his bedroom, one in the living room and a potty and a urinal in the bathroom. (Currently goes in the urinal every night before the night time nappy goes on).

When we started potty training DS he refused to go anywhere near the potty. I knew that if I could get him to wee on it and make a big fuss then I would have cracked it. I basically gave him a big bottle of water and sat with him in the bathroom while he watched the iPad. I watched him like a hawk for an hour and when he started doing a wee I plonked him on the potty, gave him a chocolate button and gave him loads of praise. He was so pleased with himself and we barely had any accidents after that at all.

My daughter was 3 and about to start nursery too after many failed attempts. she was flatly refusing to try sitting on the potty or toilet and rarely told me when she needed a nappy change.

I'd just had enough and went cold turkey one day. Told her the nappies were gone and she had to use the potty or she would have an accident. She didn't like having no leggings or pants on so we went fully dressed from the start. She wasn't happy but got it very quickly!

We rewarded with choc buttons for the first couple of days too.

With both of mine.
I made sure to watch a few potry training videos on youtube.
There is a princess potty one that is good.
Watched them a few time.
Next morning have them bare-bottomed.
Then plenty of fluids keep them drinking.
The first wee I try to catch in the potty. But you have to watch them like a hawk.
The first wee they dont know what's happened. But when you catch a wee they realise what they are supposed to do.
After a few wees, depending on fluid intake they are weeing every 15 to 20 minutes I've had a few wees in the toilet with a few accidents. They aren't fully trained but at least they realise what they are supposed to do.

Thanks everyone! We've had two wees in the potty now Grin along with two accidents. He does like sitting on the potty a bit more now too.
