Would you remove night time pull up in this situation?

DD is 5 and has a night time pull up. She regularly goes to bed, wees in the pullup within half an hour (while awake) and then gets up to go to the toilet. Sometimes she does this more than once.
She does have milk before bed but I'm starting to give this to her earlier, I'm also trying to make her go for a wee before she gets into bed.
Not sure if it's worth putting her down without a nappy on so she just goes to the toilet, then maybe waking her up at 10pm or so and either putting one on her then or taking her for a wee to see if she stays dry overnight? I know its hormonal and if she's not ready it's fine, it's more the weeing in the nappy when she's fully awake that is bothering me. It means I'm using double the amount per night or, if she doesn't call me up, she's going to sleep in a nappy already full. Anyone got any advice?

Just to add, she is wide awake when she does it and will be reading a book or playing with her toys in bed. I dont know if it's just laziness or if it is a ploy to get us to go upstairs to her but I'm pretty sure she knows she's doing it.

I would go with investing in some reusables. Even if your Dd is only wet for another year or so that would cost a fortune in disposables. Dd (12) only stopped being wet at least once a week a year ago (a few months before her periods started). I never wanted her to feel insecure about it so made no big deal, so I'm not sure how you'd discourage. You could Google ERIC website for help on child continence.

BTW, nothing worked with DD. The option we never tried was medication (desmapressin or something like that)

5 is still in the normal range for wetting at night. But if she is awake she knows she is wetting. Does he wet again during the night when asleep?

Summer41 · 08/08/2020 20:06

When she's reading her book and playing with her toys, have you turned the light off and said goodnight at that point?

If not could you leave putting the pull up on until the light goes off and she settles down, so she has to visit the toilet if she needs to go when she's reading or playing.
It definitely sounds like laziness, she needs to go but why bother when she has the pull up on!

Ds still wears his pull up and he’s 5

He went through a phase of weeing in it whilst he was awake, but we just didn’t make a big issue out of it and he doesn’t do it now

In fact he’s almost nearly completely dry at night. He can go a few days being dry but then slips up.

Again no big fuss is made about it. He will be dry when he does

difficulttod · 08/08/2020 20:14

@ineedaholidaynow it varies. Sometimes its very little, sometimes its really full. But the days it's not so full is usually when she sleeps later and I can take it as soon as she wakes up. On the mornings she wakes before me it tends to be fuller so I suspect she is doing it in the morning as well. I have asked her to take it straight off and leave it in the bathroom but she rarely does.

@Summer41 that is a good idea. Yes we have said goodnight but she has a gro clock, maybe I should give her some time to read and then come up, set the clock and put her pull up on. That is being hopeful she will settle down and go to sleep though!

@Soubriquet I'm not worried about her being in the pullup, it's that she's deliberately weeing in it then getting me to go and change her. I wouldn't mind if she genuinely didn't realise or was almost asleep and it woke her up. She is always trying to come up with ways to get us back upstairs after bedtime nd this is just the latest of many.

She gets you to change her?

Make her change herself

Ds would wee in his but still go sleep.. if he wanted to change, he would have to do it himself

ineedaholidaynow · 08/08/2020 20:18

Could you get a cover for the mattress and take off the pull up?

difficulttod · 08/08/2020 20:21

@Soubriquet in that I go and get her another pullup, yes. She will go to the toilet and do a poo so I have to go up anyway. Trust me, even if I told her to fetch her own pullup and wipe her own bum there would just be another reason to go up in the end.

@ineedaholidaynow that's a good suggestion, thank you

Reward chat for not weeing in her pull-up before sleep time? She must be aware she’s doing it.

skylarkdescending · 08/08/2020 20:28

There's only a reason to go up if you let there be a reason surely?

What happens if you put a pull up by her bed/in the bathroom and leave her to it? Gentle encouragement from the bottom of the stairs 'you're a big girl darling, go to the toilet just like you do in the daytime'.

difficulttod · 08/08/2020 20:33

I think that's the problem, @RowboatsinDisguise, she is aware. That's why I wondered if it was time to stop using them but I'm reluctant to if she's not physically ready.

@skylarkdescending I agree wholly, we have tried just telling her to do it herself but she either gets upset or just comes up with something else to shout down to us about, her little brother sleeps next to the bathroom and we have an 8 week old who both end up being woken up. It's the easiest way to sort it in the short term but not the long term really.

I get this. I have had similar issues with DC1 waking DC2.

How does she respond to rewards? I don't mean bribes, but more like giving her responsibility now she's growing up. What if you gave her a 'bedtime' when you will come in and put her pull up on and then she has to go to sleep by herself. If she doesn't wet the nappy she can earn 'points' towards something for her room? New bedding or extra story time, a new cushion or fairy lights etc?
