Nappy pants for a 5 month old?

Alarae · 07/08/2020 21:57

My daughter has just turned 5 months and with her chunky little thighs is already outgrowing her size 3 nappies and steaming into Size 4s!

We are currently using Aldi nappies (ultra dry for the day, premium for the night) but last time I was instore I bought the nappy pants on a whim, as the smallest size was a 4.

Does anyone have any experiences with them and whether they are good to use or if they are more likely to leak and I am better off sticking to nappies for now? DH obviously likes the nappy pants as they are easy to get on, but he likes the easy life!

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Nappy pants are ok generally, I used them from whatever age my baby started to flip and wriggle away during changes! But the reviews for the Aldi nappy pants on FB are really bad, so that’s something bear in mind. People saying they leak and cause skin reactions.

With a baby that young, i think the advantage of a proper nappy is that you can undo it and lift their bum clear of the poo. With nappy pants and poo, surely you risk smearing it all down their legs if they wriggle? Though yes easier to put on.

I only switch to nappy pants when potty training, as they're quick to pull down for potty access and easy to pull up again.

The wriggly nappy phase is annoying, but doesn't last forever. I'd be more annoyed by the potential poop everywhere when pulling down pants.

They tear of at the sides so that doesn't happen.

We've been using them since she was about ten months because I just find them easier to put on and they have been fine

Love pull ups, I used them from about the same time as you, no poo smears as you can year them easily at the side, the are harder to put on if baby can't stand on her own but is very wriggly! Absorbance wise, I think they're about the same for daytime, but I'm not a big fan overnights as they tend to leak. X

I used nappy pants for my DC around six months old. My DC were in size 5s by then. I don't know about Aldi nappies. But I vaguely remember the Tesco and Asda ones being rubbish, leaking more and not fitting as well as the pampers ones. The pampers ones can be easily ripped down the sides and taken off like a regular nappy.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 07/08/2020 22:51

We've stopped using Aldi nappies. For some reason they seem to have got worse recently. We now use the Sainsbury ones. They stick better and fit better. We use size 6 for my 2 yr old and my 10 month old. (10 month old is very chunky, she fits in 1.5-2yr trousers and tops)

Started using nappy pants as soon as DS started wriggling and they are amazing. Although I only buy pampers so cannot comment on other brands

zaffa · 07/08/2020 22:55

I'm really interested in this thread as I always thought nappy pants were for when they could stand up and climb into them, like pants!

DD is eight months and has very chunky thighs - I use pampers (which are ridiculously expensive but now that she often goes through the night they don't ever leak and they still have the handy wee strip on them. She's in size fours because she is very chunky. Before she started going through the night we used all the brands and I really rated tesco ones.

We also have a load of re usables that I want to start using but haven't yet gotten round to it

MotherPiglet · 07/08/2020 22:59

We started using nappy pants from around 8 months as DS would not stay still. We used the aldi ones and didnt have any issues other than occasionally overnight when he was older.. we tried other brands and it happened regardless.
I dont rate sainsburys pull ups bit morrisons or aldi both seem secure and reliable. Easily to tear at the side to remove.

SospanFrangipan · 07/08/2020 23:09

We stopped using Aldi at about 6 months and went to Pampers nappy pants, and haven't looked back. DS is 3 now and still has one on at night. I buy them in Costco, much cheaper 👍

Gettingonabitnow · 08/08/2020 06:44

I used nappy pants from around 4-5 months, simply because she always had a chubby tummy and the pants had more give. Never leaked once x

PotteringAlong · 08/08/2020 06:53

Nappy pants are more expensive though.

rottiemum88 · 08/08/2020 06:59

Love nappy pants, DS has been in them since he could get into the first size. Have only ever got on with pampers though unfortunately so it can be quite expensive unless they're on offer! He's still in a size 4 now at almost 19 months

uglyface · 08/08/2020 07:05

We used nappy pants from when she could sit independently, because of major reflux that didn’t abate until she was over 1. A band across her tummy really set off the puking. They seem equal to regular nappies apart from overnight, when they tend to leak. I’d use regular nappies overnight if I were you.

Scubalubs87 · 08/08/2020 07:10

My son has been in nappy pants since about 9 months as he was so wriggly and would just crawl away. It was easier to pin him down and whip pants on or let him stand and manoeuvre him into them. There’s no way he’d have laid still for me to put a nappy on him once he was walking. Now at 22 months, after lots of bribery, he’s finally learned if he just lays down the whole palaver is over more quickly 🙈.

However, I don’t rate Aldi pants at all. Had more than a few poo explosions in those. Never ever happens with pampers for us. I just stock up from whichever store has got an offer on at the time to make them more affordable.

Coldhandscoldheart · 08/08/2020 07:14

Lidl nappy pants are nice & soft. Mine are bigger, so poosplosions less of an issue, but we very rarely get leaks overnight.

istheresomethingwrongwithme · 08/08/2020 07:17

We've used nappy pants on our baby so bcc he was about 10 months but the Aldi ones are useless. They used to be fine but they've recently changed the side bits to a sort of papery fold rather than the elasticity stretch bit that most have. We just kept finding they ripped so easily while we were putting them on.

I buy the Morrison's ones just because that's our only other local supermarket and they're fine.

THATbasicrebelBITCH · 08/08/2020 07:18

I do find you get more poo leaks up the back with a nappy pant tbh

rottiemum88 · 08/08/2020 07:23

We literally found the opposite
HoppingPavlova · 08/08/2020 07:25

Not sure about the ones you are talking about but all the ones I ever used had sides that easily ripped open. So when dirty you ripped down each side to easily remove without getting stuff everywhere while getting it off.

THATbasicrebelBITCH · 08/08/2020 07:44

I think because when heavy due to soiling a nappy pant hangs down more due to being more stretchy where a tab fastened nappy is held in place more. I mainly find this is an issue first thing in the morning with my 3 year olds overnight nappy pant

Alarae · 08/08/2020 08:06

Well, first overnight and they leaked. Admittedly I was dubious about them anyway as they seemed a bit large on her, so it might be a size thing anyway.

I am going to put the nappy pants away and buy some premium Aldi size 4 nappies for now, then perhaps when she is bigger give then another go.

I'll definitely pick up a couple of pampers though to test against the Aldi ones when the time comes. It's two for £17 in Asda for the jumbo packs so that's not too bad (although admittedly quite more expensive than Aldi!).

If you have amazon prime you can get pampers nappies and nappy pants at a decent price with subscribe and save

Marmite27 · 08/08/2020 08:13

My dinky 2 year old has been in them for about 8 months. She’s starting to our wee them now, so we are getting leaks, but tbh she could do with the absorbency of a size 5.

She’s rarely had any skin reactions to them. Only if she’s keen left too long, like on a car journey where we’ve struggled to stop.

Marmite27 · 08/08/2020 08:16

The problem with the 5’s is they fall down when wet
