Too hot for newborn

FTM with week old dd. I’m obsessing over my gro egg/ temperature charts.

Room thermometer saying it’s 26 degrees in the bedroom - that’s with all upstairs windows open and 2 fans on in the room. I know that’s too hot but not quite sure what else I can do?

She’s just in a vest though I’m going to take that off probably. She won’t sleep except on me but I’m worried I’m making her hotter. We use cellular blankets but I won’t use one tonight - should I cover her at all? Just with a muslin maybe?

She seems pretty relaxed and fine I’m just worried.

Also agree with @2155User - my DC2 had a fever at 3 weeks old, it was a heatwave but he was red hot to touch. I didn’t even need a thermometer, it was obvious.

Thank you all for calming me down considerably! Grin

I got an air conditioning (proper) unit for £200. So worth it.

FWIW OP I’m currently sat up (after very little sleep last night) obsessing over 5 month old DS.

My gro egg is casting the red glow of shame and DS is fidgeting in his sleep (26 degrees) I’d had him in a vest and thin sleep suit when he went down at 8pm (it was 23 degrees then) I’ve since managed to extract the sleep suit without waking him!

You never stop worrying. In the early days I took DS’s temp reguarly and kept an eye on wet nappies, those are good indicators.

Seriously though, somebody does need to get labour/postnatal wards a bloody gro egg!! I almost fainted off, I’ve had Caribbean holidays that were cooler!

@Mysa74
Resort to?!
At fifteen days old I was advised skin to skin 80% of the the day. I assumed the remaining 20% was for toilet and eating breaks.
Maternity advise seems to differ so vastly!!

Ds was raised in Saudi Arabia. He did have aircon in his room but it was noisy and shite, so we didn't use it. Chuck the gro egg. Nappy and a cotton sheet will be fine.

@Savingshoes

80%?! Wow. I doubt I even managed 50%!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 07/08/2020 22:41

That bloody Gro Egg used to tell me it was too hot in November! We called it Judgey Egg Grin and ditched it quite quickly. It’s bloody hot and there’s only so much you can do to cool the room, you don’t need that making you feel worse. Just take sensible steps and baby will be fine.

surreygirl1987 · 07/08/2020 22:51

@threesecrets we also got an a.c. unit!! Bought it on sale after Xmas and have been using it so much since lockdown started!

GisAFag · 07/08/2020 23:17

Close windows, close curtains, it keeps it cool (it does actually) according to Dr Hilary on Good morning Britain.. He's been a Dr for at least 90 years. Baby should have a vest on too.. And a nappy obvs.

My 3.5 month old is in a nappy and a thin cellular blanket - does he need a vest as well?

hedgehogger1 · 08/08/2020 09:29

I bet those maternity wards are too hot in your gro egg. I remember feeling like I was cooking

surreygirl1987 · 08/08/2020 11:20

Oh yeh those maternity wards are horrendous. I was so hot one of the midwives went and got me a freeze pop!

HildaSnibbs · 08/08/2020 12:23

Oh dear lord it's too hot. I'm bf DD3 (11 weeks) and she's sticking to me like glue... I've got her in a short sleeve vest to reduce the sticky skin area. Fan definitely helps cool us down.
