Cleaning breast milk poo off babies bum! Help

Charis1503 · 05/08/2020 21:32

Baby No2 is currently 8 days old.

Despite regular nappy changing, and giving his little bottom air time of an evening he has a red sore bottom ( I feel awful!!)

I'm concious that I'm having to do lots of wiping as baby wipes just DO not seem to remove breast milk poos but spread it around. We r using the 99.9% water wipes as I don't want ones with chemicals that may sting him.

My first born was a NICU baby and combination fed so never had the issue of pure breast milk poos.. the formula held it together a bit more.

I'm debating buying some large cotton wool pads and using baby lotion to clean him? Any other suggestions? We only have a dinky washing machine and my eldest used cloth nappies for overnight so don't want to go down the route of cheeky wipes....

Water and cotton wool if you don’t want to use cloth wipes

emmaluggs · 05/08/2020 21:35

I had 2 breastfed babies and never had problems with using water wipes to remove it all, with my first I did use cotton wool the type you tear off and just used warm water for the first few weeks and that was fine too, but 2nd was water wipes from the start.

I use cloth but if dc I looks a bit sore I use cold camomile tea instead of water which seems to work wonders

ManxRhyme · 05/08/2020 21:35

I washed my newborn DC's bum under the bathroom sink. Then pat dry. Much quicker, cleaner and no soreness.

KatherineOfGaunt · 05/08/2020 21:36

We used wet flannels (Cheeky wipes) and just water worked fine for cleaning up DS.

I remember one woman with a similar aged baby said she often used 7 wet wipes for one nappy change!! For me, it's a big poo if I have to use three flannels, usually one is fine.

Melassa · 05/08/2020 21:45

Me too, or else damp cotton wool with calendula oil, which is soothing.

Up to 6 months I only ever bathed mine in warm water with a drop or two of calendula or olive oil, never soap. At that age they don’t get dirty so no need. Never had a sore bum.

dannydyerismydad · 05/08/2020 21:47

Cotton wool and water. Use the pads, rather than balls to avoid a fluffy bum.

Washable wipes are best, but cotton wool is the next best thing.

mindutopia · 05/08/2020 21:56

One of mine was ff and the other bf and I can't say there was any difference in their poo. Both equally easy/tricky to clean off and neither more solid til closer to 2 years. Cloth wipes are much better than disposable ones those and even now (nearly 3 year old), I prefer those.

PoppedTheHipAgain · 05/08/2020 22:02

My first was ff, second bf. There was a huge difference for us.

Under warm water in a sink or bath was my preferred way if I was at home.

Used washable nappies which need changing more often anyway, and bare bum time was always best after a gentle water rinse. But in my family, we have a lot of sensitivities to chemicals in wipes etc.

QueenOfCatan · 05/08/2020 22:04

Cheeky wipes (or any flannel!) were the best thing for both of mine!

Pinkflipflop85 · 05/08/2020 22:14

Reusable wipes are your friend.

Things like water wipes just smear it everywhere.

Merename · 05/08/2020 22:17

I agree, cheeky wipes. And washing under tap, avoids any friction against already sore areas.

2Kidsinatrenchcoat · 05/08/2020 22:20

Give cloth wipes a go, you don’t have to buy cheeky wipes brand, cheap flannels do the job just fine. You usually only have to use one per poo so they don’t actually take up much extra space in the washing machine.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 05/08/2020 22:21

Don't use baby lotion, it'll sting like crazy, speaking from experience of using some on chapped hands.

Both my DS's had the nappy rash from hell and I found cleaning with liquid paraffin on cotton wool was a gentle way to clean off the poo. (Someone on Mumsnet freaked out when I said that and thought I was using the kind of paraffin you use for lamps but it's basically liquid vasaline you get from a chemist)

If you can't shift the rash, check for fungal nappy rash in case it's that.

MindyStClaire · 05/08/2020 22:50

We use the Huggies pure wipes, we find them much better than the water wipes, and cheaper too. We use bepanthem as well as barrier cream to stop them getting sore.

BridgettJ · 05/08/2020 22:51

Water wipes should be working fine? Make sure you get all otherwise they get nappy rash!!!!

Bath every night too.

gobananasgo · 05/08/2020 23:03

I used waterwipes, but dried them with the cotton wool makeup pads ( so they don't molt) they are small, but cotton wool balls/ pleats or baby pads will cause cotton wool to stick to the wet bits. Occasionally used some child's farm newborn moisturiser.

Used a barrier of sudacream on occasions, but that was probably later on in a short bf green poo stage. Confused

grey12 · 06/08/2020 10:17

Always use makeup remover cotton circles and water. Once you use cotton circles you'll feel like wipes don't work at all!!!

Do be careful with poos. Change asap and after a few minutes check the diaper again. Soft poos can "leak out" after changing the diaper. I remember DD1 worst diaper rash Sad I felt so sorry for her! I used to use lanolin as diaper rash cream but tbh then started using pharmacy one to get rid of any redness or soreness as quickly as possible!!

2155User · 06/08/2020 10:28

Never used anything other than cotton wool/lukewarm water until DS was around 5 months. Worked brilliantly

Toddlerteaplease · 06/08/2020 11:19

Dry Cotten will pads are best for shifting meconium. And probably just as good for breast milk poo.

Caspianberg · 06/08/2020 11:53

I would use cheeky wipes/ flannels. If your only using the wipes and not reusable nappies you would only need to wash them maybe twice per week (I would bung all baby muslins, bibs etc in same 60 degree wash and its fine)

We use fleece liner in overnight washable nappies. Baby butt is super dry in the mornings. Maybe try a fleece liner in his disposables? the idea is the wee goes through the liner and leaves bum not against any urine.

Also, after wiping, try using a muslin cloth to make sure bum is fully dry and not damp

AWryGiraffe · 06/08/2020 12:01

Cloth wipes are amazing. I use a Muslin to pat dry. Wet wipes just smear it everywhere!

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 06/08/2020 15:25

Cloth wipes. I use cheeky wipes but you can just buy flannels and use them. One wipe per poo is all thats needed!
