Hello there,

FTM here... supposed to be meeting my friend for a socially distanced picnic at my house under a tree in the shade.

It’s looking to be really hot... 33-34 degrees. My newborn will be 4 weeks old. Is this safe or should we stay inside? Xx

It’s fine. People have babies in hot countries all the time. Stay in the shade. DO NOT put anything over the pram to shade them; it will just make it hotter.

Yes just stay in the shade - I'd have thought the house wouldn't be much cooler? As PP said don't put the pram in the sun with a muslin over, it'll get too hot in there. I'd probably put the baby lying on a blanket next to me in just a vest and nappy to get the benefit of any breeze.

Shade, lots of drinks for you, enjoy!

Be aware as well that baby might want to feed little and often. Itll be ok though.

You probably know this, but don’t put sunscreen on a newborn. You could take a little hand can to create a breeze maybe?

It’s fine, but maybe go inside during the hottest part of the day. You can still get burned even in the shade, so I wouldn’t have a baby or young child outside for several hours in that type of heat.

From Sunsmart

“Actually, it’s UV radiation – not sunlight – that damages your skin. Even though we can’t see or feel them, UV rays reflect off surfaces like sand, water and even grass.

So while a leafy tree or shade sail will block some UV rays, others will bounce from those sunny areas to reach your skin!”

You’re allowed to meet a friend for a coffee in Costa, so it’s fine for her to come into your house.

I would have the baby out on a blanket in the shade, not in the pram as they get very hot and no breeze

May be worth getting some factor 50 for the baby too, just in case as pp said about UV

Going against the grain, I would absolutely avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day, and only stay out for shorter bursts. Shade doesn't mean you won't get burnt, and a 4 week old I would be careful.

You can't put sunscreen on a baby until they are 6 months old.

Keep in shade and even try a little paddling pool or bring their baby bath out Smile

I have a fisher price pop up sun tent for babies which is good.

Enjoy!

The house won't be any cooler most likely, like people said though babies are born in hot countries all the time and they're fine. Stick to the shade but don't cover the pram.

Staplemaple · 05/08/2020 23:45

Pretty sure you don't get sunburn indoors Confused it's also easier to cool the temp in the house. Babies in hot countries are also advised to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day.

I've always struggled with the heat with my little ones. It's been an anxiety of mine. My eldest was born in May 2018 and it was such a hot summer he lived in just a nappy and never wore any of his lovely newborn clothes!

Similar to everyone, I'd stay in the shade for short bursts between outside and inside. Feel the back of babies neck or their chest to make sure they are not too hot.
A baby bath or little pool does sound lovely and if it's a pool I'd be sitting in their with the little one 😁😆
