Hey. since taking the side off my sons (who is 2yrs) cot a couple of weeks ago, he has from sleeping a solid 7-7 to waking up anywhere from 3am to 5am and coming into our bedroom! Any advice on how to keep him in his own room?? I'm 6 months pregnant with DS2 and I'm exhausted! Thank you :)

Groclock? Maybe he's not really ready for the bed yet, can you put him back in the cot?

FelicityBob · 05/08/2020 06:52

Stair gate across his door

Put the side back on the cot?

Put a stair gate on his bedroom door?

Put the side back on ! You need an easy ride for the next few months , try again when baby is here and sleeping for decent chunks. He’ll be a bit older and have better comprehension of what it all means. We’re just taking the sides of ours for my DS for his 3rd birthday.
It’s not like it gives them anymore space as it’s the exact same sleeping area just without sides!

I just let mine sleep with me. I would rather get sleep then have kids crying behind a gate. Mine hated their cots so slept in toddler beds from 15 months.

...this is kinda confusing advice - you got round this problem by letting your kids sleep in your bed, but they were in toddler beds from 15 months?

Also not really sure it's practical to have a toddler in your bed while heavily pregnant.

Thanks everyone! @Bitchinkitchen do you think a growclock would work when he's 2?
He was starting to climb out of his cot so thought it was best to try with the sides off. He's also never slept in our bed so when he comes into our room it's just play time and he won't drift back off again in bed with us 😆🙈

We used a Groclock from about 15/16 months. Took a lot of reinforcing at that age (cuddling him in bed, explaining the sun wasn't there so it was time to sleep) but he got the idea and it works well for us. He's always been a terrible sleeper so awake a lot (still now 3.5 years old) but at least he stays in his bed!

I don't see why not, at 2 his understanding should be pretty good even if his communication isn't brilliant yet. Talk about it in the day, show it to him lots, and use simple, repetitive language. Then be super, super consistent. DO NOT GIVE IN.

Got a gro clock for my son’s second birthday and it’s been brilliant! Took him about a week to understand it but now doesn’t shout for us (or even wake up) until the clock is yellow. We haven’t taken the side off his cot yet but will do in the next couple of weeks as also 6 months pregnant and it’s getting harder to lift him in and out of it. Hoping that because he’s had the gro clock training he won’t regress too badly...

FelicityBob · 05/08/2020 22:08

Hate the gro clock. If my son does magically sleep a bit later then the gro clock wakes him up when it goes yellow. And just because it’s blue it doesn’t have magic powers to make them stay in bed. Also the blue light is bloody bright even on the lowest setting. Biggest waste of money for us

HarrietM87 · 06/08/2020 09:41

Is it really close to his cot or something @FelicityBob?! I also found the light quite bright but we put it on the far side of his room and also slightly behind his cot, so he can’t see it when he’s lying down. He’d have to be awake and actively trying to see it iyswim.

It obviously doesn’t have “magic powers” but tbh it totally works for my son - he understands that when it’s blue he won’t be coming out so no point trying to persuade us. I’m just hoping it lasts!

FelicityBob · 06/08/2020 10:09

Nope it’s the other side of the room! Think my kids just prefer sleeping in darkness. I sounded a bit bitter in my last post Grin sorry think I’m just jealous when other children respond well to the gro clock!

KeyboardMash · 06/08/2020 11:07

You could also try a bed-guard? Might give him the feeling of being enclosed and 'safe', which he might be missing?
