my 18mth old daughter has the worst nappy rash i've ever seen on either of my two, she's had it for 3 days now and its so bad this morning she wont sit on it or wont walk either....and she's normally unstoppable, i have tried bepanthen, sudocreme and cooled camomile tea but nothing has soothed it, i'm now getting 30mins of crying after a nappy change, i cant get through to my GP yet and am desperate for anything to help her!!! i hate to see her like this!!

It could be thrush - if you rub your finger over it gently, does it feel bobbly?

Get some canestan from the pharmacist - make sure you tell him it's for a child and he will give you the milder version.

It should clear it up almost straight away

live yoghurt or egg white helped for my lo

growingbagpuss · 02/10/2007 09:19

Calpol!! My DS had some awful phases where his poor little bottom was bleding it was os bad. persevere, and v frequent nappy changes. Get some disposable mat things so your LO can lie napy free for as much as possible.

Good Luck|

Ah - sorry, just realised she's walking.... erm... next size up nappy then, as loose as possible. and nothing else.

glaskham · 02/10/2007 09:26

thanks for the advice, i think i will try more time without a nappy on, she is walking but wont bare it for the pain at the moment- and has spent all morning just led on the couch- which she never does!! she is currently in her brothers size 5 nappy when she's normally only a 4 but its not helped much....its a full red bumpy rash, and its bumpy, almost blister-looking, and is bleeding a touch too.....

metanium with a layer of sudocrem on top worked for my ds's bad nappy rash. Watch the metanium though - it is bright yellow and stains!!

BigHotMama · 02/10/2007 10:38

I second the metanium, has cleared my ds' severe nappy rash in few days, he will actually sit in the bath now

huglinson · 02/10/2007 21:09

metanium and a dusting of boots medicated powder sorted my boy out pretty quick. he was in a bad way and crying like your LO

angelaki · 28/10/2007 00:05

oh yes, there's a great booklet out on exactly this. You have to go on angela kilmartin's site where she talks about it all and shows how to ease it. Thrush is only one cause and thrush is also dealt with.
The current fad for eating pasta all the time creates energy and glucose during digestion. Stop the pasta and better breastmilk will help ease the nappy rash!!In one end and out the other!!

weepotion · 28/10/2007 00:36

bit of a plug there angelaki????

nappyaddict · 28/10/2007 01:22

try canesten first. if thrush it will go away if not no harm done and you can try something else.

Anabellesmumanddad · 03/11/2007 06:40

I swear by backing soda baths. If your baby is still in little bath about 2 teaspoons will help. Our little one has had TERRIBLE rashes which seem to come from nowhere, fast. Backing soda will help regardless of the cause (i.e. thrush or other)

Anabellesmumanddad · 03/11/2007 06:41

Sorry I meant baking soda not 'backing' soda

dunno if youve tried;

ditch wipes altogether and use flannel or water-spray in (empty or v v low) bath.

if in dispys, try adding a liner (silk or fleece) to keep off skin.

ive got half tubes and pots of every cream going so can send you as samples if you like to see what works for you?

NappiesShnappiesPANTSgalore · 03/11/2007 14:02

time out of nappies only real solution for us. switched to cloth and that improved it greatly. now hes training himself following a week on hol in warm weather and constant nekkidness.

MaeBee · 07/11/2007 13:51

much sympathy, my boy has nappy rash at moment too. its actually bleeding today, and he wails like a banshee at changing time. big problem right now is he's pooing 4 or 5 times a day, and whilst i try to be as prompt as poss with changing him afterwards, i don't always know straight away. and then i change him and he poos within minutes.
was wondering if i should clog him up a bit with some less fibrous foods?!
he had his first nappy rash 2 weeks ago and we used canesten (on dr;'s advice) and loads of nappy off time, and it did clean up. just got back from holiday though and its all bad again. so i guess back to the beginning.

bookthief · 07/11/2007 13:56

It seems like different things work for different people, but what worked for ds's hideous nappy rash in the end was a thick coating of Lansinoh. I think it just was a brilliant barrier to contact with the most hideously corrosive poo.

If you've got some still kicking about the house it might be worth a try. Vaseline would work on the same principle I suppose.
