I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous but...

I was shopping for a new push chair for my 8mo.
Now.. I went into the shop, approached staff member and asked her where their 'Joie' range was.

She looked at me as if I was crazy, I showed her the picture on their website and she let out a big 'Ohhhh, that's over here' took me to the push chair and went again.

Now I know maybe I should've asked her at the time, but now I'm home, baby is asleep and I have a moment to actually think - I have clearly been pronouncing it wrong this whole time, like a idiot complete dickhead

I say it as 'Joey' ??

@Wavescrashingonthebeach

Joy. Its French. Think of the phrase Joie de Vivre.
Joie de Vivre is pronounces Jwah duh Veevrrer.

The men in the pub we stopped in to ask directions pronounced Beauchamp “Beecham”. Their local street, their pronunciation. I figure that way of saying it evolved over time - it just never would have occurred to us to say it that way.

I always say Joey in my head still, even though I know it’s pronounced Joy!

@ArriettyJones I know that Smile (got French A level & had a Parisian flatmate) but to someone who doesnt speak French its easier saying to them Joy rather than Joey.
I know what you mean about the Jwah pronunciation, but Joie doesnt end with an "ahh" sound, it ends with an "oi" sound but the beginning is almost more of 'zhjw' sound ie something that its difficult for me to put into writing without someone reading it wrong hence sticking with a simple Joy.

As in how he says it here:

BobFleming · 05/08/2020 19:02

Joey? Grin

No wonder she looked at you askance!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 05/08/2020 19:05

I thought it was Joy. Probably should be said in a French accent but I'd feel silly saying it that way (not that I've needed to say it as dc are 15 and 13 so way past pram and car seat stage)

eurochick · 05/08/2020 19:31

It's a French word pronounced jwah for which the English translation is Joy. I've never heard it pronounced Joey but I've heard both the English and French ways.

BertieBotts · 07/08/2020 21:18

It's Joy, but with a kind of zh rather than hard j sound.

I would totally know what you mean if you said Joey, though!
