Baby Eczema Advice Please

My baby boy is 13 weeks old. He has little red patches on his elbow/leg creases and around his neck. We knew he was liley to develop eczema because it runs in both our families. I will contact the GP tomorrow but in the meantime I just wanted to find out what products worked for your little ones. I realise each baby is different and it may be a case of trial and error but I'd like to have a list of options.

We have already tried child's farm but it made things worse.

A couple of people have suggested Aveeno but there are so many Aveeno products/creams. If anyone could post a link to the specific one that would ve really helpful.

Finally I wondered do you apply the cream everywhere or just the affected and should I reduce the number of baths as currently we are doing everyday.

I am in the same situation. I never use anything but water to wash mine and haven't since they were born. Even hair can be washed with just water. Lukewarm bath once a week. If they get very dirty, a bit of moisturiser can be used as a soap substitute. Pat skin dry, don't rub. And make sure to moisturise all over within 15 mins of getting out of bath.

Breastfeed for as long as possible. Maybe think about removing some common triggers such as dairy from your own diet. I hope it gets better soon!

Our moisturiser and soap substitute is epimax, prescribed by GP.

My dd developed this at 5.5 months. We were prescribed 1% hydrocortisone to use when there’s a flare up (just on the eczema patches) and moisturisers so far:
Epiderm (thick, vaseline-like) - not much use for us
Lush Dream Cream (on friend’s advice) - good, but no miracle effects and weirdly expensive
Dermal 500 - the best so far for us, and can be used in the bath as soap.
It does seem to be individual to the child though, friends’ babies have had different preferences.

I also gave up dairy which seems to have helped a lot, and only bathe 1-2 times a week. Good luck! It’s horrible when it’s flaring up on such a little thing isn’t it.

There’s a cream called Aquamax which is very good. I also use a mix of the Lush dream cream and whatever the eczema cream you get in the massive pump bottles at the chemist is (forget what it’s called but it doesn’t smell nice but works- I also use it as a cleanser in the bath too).

Hi,

Cetraban or epaderm ointment is what I tend to use but the brands aren't that different. I personally think that ointment is far more effective than lotion or cream. If particularly bad a little bit of hydrcort can really help. Emollient (ointment /cream) can be applied everywhere as much as you like, steroid cream in affected areas twice a day. Emollient cream first then steroid. I would probably drop bathing every day, and go for every other at the most. Use soap substitutes (or nothing at all) in the bath rather than bubble bath.

If it doesn't clear up easily and quickly in a 13 week old baby, then a trial of dairy free would be my first port of call. If breast feeding, just cut dairy out of your own diet, if not will need a prescription milk.

I'm a paediatrician, but obviously have not seen your baby 😂. So the above is generic type advice and with such a little one, popping to your gp and doing what they suggest is a good first step.

Forgot to say - oats in the bath are good as well (put them in the foot of some 10denier tights and hold them under running water, then use as a sponge).
