18 month old banging head against the cot

Last night and tonight our 18 month old has been crying hysterically and banging his head against the cot - to the extent that he has cut his lip with blood over his face and sheets.

He usually goes to bed at 7pm with no issues but it’s 9pm now and he’s still up crying hysterically.

We are trying to soothe him as best we can but nothing seems to work.

Question is - is it too early for a bed? The cot just seems too dangerous.

Thank you

It was really hot last night, he might have been trying to cool down.

Thanks @samb80 we thought this too and had the fan on in his room but it didn’t seem to make a difference. He’s in his cot with a tin cotton romper PJ thing that has short arms and legs. I’m hoping he’ll go back to being himself once this heatwave is over.

I put my DS in a bed at a similar age because he injured himself on the bars of the cot. I had to child proof his whole room and it was difficult to make him stay in bed. I ended up sleeping with him a lot of the time.

Thanks @LegoMaus, I may do the same depending on how things go tomorrow. What did you do with the radiator in your little one’s room (if they have one in their room?)

He had a mouthful of blood and I just thought if he breaks his teeth from head butting the cot he’ll have to put up with them for years, and possibly have to be put to sleep so the dentist can sort them out. So I got rid of the cot for his safety even though it was inconvenient for me.

The radiator is turned down so it gets warm but not red hot. It’s turned off completely for about six months of the year anyway. I always think it’s dangerous for a child’s radiator to be hot, and a hot room at night can be a danger in itself.

Hi OP sorry to hear hope this is improves!

Just wanted to chip in that pool noodles (the foam tube float thjngs) are an excellent and cheap cushion for radiator edges. Not the prettiest but does the job well.

I'm sending you cooler nights vibes!

@GreyPanther I've just switched ds nearly 2.5 to a bed and on day number 2 he jumped to put his head in the pillow and hit the foot of the bed instead cutting his head, we went to homebase the next morning and bought some insulated pipe foam tubes and put it over the end of the bed so that at least it is softer if he bumps off it again... He moves about alot during his asleep. maybe it might help.. Just watch incase your ds might try and eat it. A friend had suggested pool noodles but I couldn't find any which is why we use the foam insulation tube.. I cut it down to size after I had taken this photo
