Newborn sleep questions

Hello
FTM here of an 8 week old. I’m sure there isn’t a clear answer on this but for an exclusively breast fed baby

  1. If they feed for longer does that mean they are full and will sleep longer
  1. Can you encourage a longer feed? Also is it better if in the breast as they get more fat?

Thank you!

  1. No
  2. No to the first part of the question. If they don’t feel like it they don’t feel like it but you can help extend a session if they are still hungry but just getting distracted. Not sure the fat question but I’d expect so.

Also! He likes to then fall asleep on my chest which is lovely but difficult to move him then... what age does that stop as in they don’t want to or just can’t fit/get comfy?

Yeh it hasn’t yet. I have an 8 month old. It is easier to move her once she’s asleep though.

Hi OP, congrats on your little one Flowers babies will just take as much milk as they need until they are full, but their stomach is only the size of a malteaser at that age hence why they need to feed every 2 hours or so! With the sleep thing, I’d say it’s easier to move them once they’re asleep...but my DD is 8 months and has literally this past week stopped napping on me during the day (she’s breastfed too).

I have no experience of BF, but on the sleep question - I held my baby for naps until she was about 4 months old. It's completely normal for small babies to want to sleep on a person - I felt trapped by it so made an effort to teach her gradually to fall asleep with a dummy but not on me, which took a little while. She has napped in the cot from about 5 months.

If you are happy to hold your baby for naps and enjoy it, then there's nothing wrong with doing it for as long as you both want. The baby will let you know when they would rather nap somewhere else!
