Can we talk about talc?

DD is 13 months and her nappy rash has just gone off the chart. We give her bum as much air time as we can but she’s at nursery 6 hrs a day so it’s not practical to give more.

Metanium doesn’t appear to be effective this time and as DD is such a wriggly nightmare to get a nappy on I fear neither me or the nursery have patted her dry post wipe.

Her bum is blistering and I want to use talc (or Asda liquid talc) but I know it’s bad nowadays.

Does anyone use talc and what are the risks?

I’m all out of ideas as to what to do

Isn’t it linked to cancer?

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/07/2020 19:21

Sounds painful! Do her nappies fit well? My DS wore pull out nappy today and before bed noticed his bum looked sore and I wonder if the nappy rubbed!

If yellow metanium isn't working, take her to the GP and get her checked for thrush.

SoPanny · 28/07/2020 19:26

Yep @OverTheRainbow88

I saw some US stuff as well but I find they tend to have a mildly sensationalist angle so appreciate the NHS link.

Am thinking of going for something using cornstarch. It’s similar to talc in that it won’t cake and is absorbent but no oxides and that.

She’s in a mix of pull ups and tabbed nappies.

@FourPlasticRings can that present as a blister or chafe on outer bits such as actual bum cheek (as opposed to bum crack, vulval area)?

Possibly not thrush then- could be fungal? I tend to find that if yellow metanium is no match for it, it's probably not nappy rash. I'd take her to the doctor's to get looked at, if I were you, and explain that the yellow metanium isn't working on it like it usually does.

dementedpixie · 28/07/2020 19:50

thrush is fungal. Try a talc free powder and maybe refer to the gp.

WeDontTalkAboutLove · 28/07/2020 19:53

Probably obvious, but have you asked your HV or GP?
We had a similar problem and ended up resorting to reusable nappies with a fleece liner to wick all moisture away. It was my HV who recommended trying it and we were down for trying anything at this point. It worked within a week and we still use them from time to time.
I suspect a fleece liner in a normal disposable would have the same affect.

SoPanny · 28/07/2020 20:17

I’ve just ordered replacement fleece sanitary towels from Little Lamb (who primarily make reusable nappy liners).

Would it be insane to try those (obviously as yet unused) on DD?

thrush is fungal

Yes, but not the only fungal infection possible. Also, OP, have a Google of 'thrush on bum'- turns out it definitely can cause blisters over the whole backside.

No. But do take her to the doctor's.

kayakingmum · 28/07/2020 20:54

Sudacreme is good stuff. I would never use talc.

FourPlasticRings · 28/07/2020 20:54

Twice DD has had nappy rash that hasn't cleared up with metanium. The canestan cream prescribed by the doctor cleared it up rapidly both times. I really wouldn't waste time fannying around with trying out powders and fleece liners before getting the doctor to have a look.

Anyway, hope your DD gets better soon, poor mite.

AllMyGreggsInOneBasket · 28/07/2020 21:00

My eldest had awful nappy rash, blisters and everything. DH brought this random cream back from Boots once called Drapolene - that really helped, we used to put that on at night time. It’s pink and smells mildly medicinal but it worked well for him.

mathanxiety · 28/07/2020 21:07

Never use talc, neither on you nor your baby. The cornstarch powder is far safer.

Having said that, don't use the cornstarch powder on your DD. There is no need for powder of any kind on babies.

There is no need to wipe after changing a wet nappy. She just needs to be let dry off a bit. The only reason to use a wipe is to clean up after a poo.

Don't faff around with cloth nappies, powders, or creams.

What she has sounds like a fungal infection. Go to your GP before her sores get some sort of bacterial infection too.

mathanxiety · 28/07/2020 21:09

The risk of talc is not just cancer.

Talc is a ground up rock, basically. It can be mildly abrasive.

On top of that, there is usually an added scent that can be irritating.

FlorestanAndEusebius · 28/07/2020 21:37

Just to add to what others have said, we found putting Vaseline over yellow metanium sorted DD2's awful nappy rash. HV advised this as otherwise the cream was being washed away by pee and not getting a chance to work.

BertieBotts · 28/07/2020 21:39

Has it got worse since she's been at nursery? They might be changing her too often and using loads of wipes so she's permanently damp. I've heard of this issue in nursery settings before.

Aimzxo · 28/07/2020 22:37

This sounds just like my little girl no amount of airing or anything would help

I took her to see the pharmacist and she had a fungal infection, metanium sudocrem nothing worked, so he recommended hydrocortisone its about 3 quid a tube and its really good clears it right up quite quickly xx
