Panting

Hi,

I've noticed for the last few days that my daughter has been sort of panting (not sticking her tongue out, just the breathing side). She's only 19 days old and I'm a new parent too 🤦🏻‍♂️. Any advice would be appreciated thank you Mike

Please get urgent medical advice. She is very young. Call 111.

Hey Mike - please don't panic. Newborn babies breathe a LOT faster than adults, it can sound like panting and be quite irregular! Their lungs are tiny and their systems are brand new. Watch how your baby behaves. Is she a good colour? Does she seem to be able to hold herself normally? If she's at all blue/grey or floppy then call 999 (i know it sounds extreme but new babies are both v fragile and much tougher than you'd expect, so it's always best to be super cautious) but if she's a normal colour and feels alright in your arms, just keep a close eye.

Instinct is a powerful thing. Give her a cuddle and focus on her breathing. Does it feel wrong? Or just not-like-grownups? If you think something is wrong, call for help. If it just feels like something you're not used to, continue to keep a really close eye on her and reassess in a few hours. Don't leave her by herself and don't panic!

This is what I'm not sure of because I've watched her before and after feeds and she does it, I do have a video of it also.

She seems a normal colour and she's not floppy, it just doesn't seem right to me. She doesn't do it all the time thou.

Thank you
The joys of being a new dad 😂.

If it doesn't feel right, call. You won't be wasting anyone's time, absolutely everyone wants to be safe rather than sorry with a newborn.

Also, and this bit fucking sucks, make sure you call rather than baby's mum - far too many healthcare professionals discount first time mums as being hysterical, but listen to men. If you think something is wrong, don't let them fob you off. Throw your weight around, make a scene - your baby can't advocate for herself, don't be afraid to do it for her.

Good luck, I'm sure everything is fine, and above all else congratulations on your lovely little girl - it's the scariest thing in the world but it fucking rocks. You've got this.

Thank you,

I'll happily do everything I can and throw my weight around to make sure she's safe. People saying it's wind but it don't sit properly. I might make the call and see what they say.

Thank you
