Ideas for a different approach to Halloween & Christmas due to Covid

I was reading a thread about people changing plans at Christmas due to Covid. I had been thinking about this myself as we usually have loads on in December - theatre, santa, Christmas markets etc. which we won’t be doing. However, I wondered about Halloween too. Where we live the place goes to town, it’s a bit American in that sense and the community really get involved - my son loves it. Again, I just won’t feel comfortable come October to be in the midst and throng of trick or treaters/handing out sweets.

I still want my son to have fun and these occasions to be memorable. So the point of my thread is to help me pull some ideas together for what we can do? I appreciate it’s a way off, things change etc, but this is for a ‘just in case’.

I’ve already thought about a Halloween hunt in the garden, but stuck for if there’s anything else or better to do. I have no ideas for Christmas.

Thanks in advance.

Halloween is 3 months away and Christmas is 6 months. Thinking about how much has changed in the last 3 months and 6 months, it seems a bit early to start worrying about it to be honest. We have no idea what the restrictions will be at that time - whether they'll be stricter than now or looser.

I'm moving more towards indoor based crafts etc, trying to replicate some childhood memories a bit!

We've never really done Halloween in a big way, but I've decided to make this for indoor decor (realise not to everyone's taste!): attic24.typepad.com/weblog/autumn-leaves-and-acorns.html and attic24.typepad.com/weblog/2017/10/crochet-pumpkin-patch.html

Then I guess apple bobbing, pumpkin carving, indoor Halloween themed treasure hunt? My childminder has in the past made some great gauzy ghosts with the kids, and maybe you could do bats from black card?

For Christmas, those old school paper chains (you can get kits), orange pomanders, making cards for special people, baking a gingerbread house (replicating some Christmas market smells!)

Sure there's more, but that's off the top of my head Smile

@Peeeas Thank you. Can’t believe that was off the top of your head, I must say some of them I thought “why didn’t I think of that?!”

@KitKatastrophe completely agree, but this is a just in case. Whilst not wanting this to become another Covid thread, I personally feel much more comfortable being prepared and not rushing trying to find things if things haven’t improved to a safe enough stage. If you have any ideas or things you’ve tried in the past, I definitely welcome your suggestions :)
