Hi
We have recently had a baby boy and are starting to try and wind him as he’s struggling to release the wind himself.
I am just wondering if anyone has any tips and when I’ve tried winding him he doesn’t burp to release the wind he just farts is this common or has anyone experienced this when winding there son ?

Many Thanks

I think as long as it comes out, it doesn't matter which end.

Lots of good positions and tricks on you tube. Tiger in tree hold got Dd wind up every time.

Congratulations.

Thankyou for your advice I shall certainly have a look also what’s best things to use other than nappy sacks as can’t find any in shops locally at the moment ?

Really? That's weird. When peak of lockdown hit tesco kept sending me them instead of wipes......not so handy.

Eh dog poo bags? Really just a wee bag to stop the smell stinking out your bin.

We have 2 dogs so I’ll just use a couple of black poo bags I suppose and tescos said they haven’t got any in delivery for week or so

Thankyou

Perfect. No difference really.

Someone showed me this technique where you sit them on your knee, one hand across the chest and supporting under the chin, the other across the back and a few fingers supporting the back of the head, then you gently bend them backwards and forwards and also in a circle. This always helped get my son’s wind up. Hope the description makes sense. All the movement is in their waist, moving the top half while below the waist sits on your knee.

@FizzingWhizzbee123 Would that work as when ever we wind him he doesnt burp but farts ?

My DS used to fart a lot and ended up with reflux too and would get quite upset. So along with some ranitidine I used to lie him on his back and do cycle moves with his legs to help get the gas out. I have never heard a baby fart like it but he was happier for it

Our dd struggles with bringing up wind and has mild colic, we give her infacol and it works a treat, you can buy it in most supermarkets and it's suitable from birth.

@sunflowersandtulips50 and @Megzmoo Thankyou I shall give them a go

My babies tended to get farty if they weren't been winded enough. I'm guessing because I wasn't getting the burps out, the gas was working it's way down. I'd concentrate on trying different positions/ techniques to make him burp. Once you get the hang of it you should have less farts and a more comfortable baby.

Spanglebangle · 23/07/2020 21:58

Hold him completely straight from stomach to throat either sitting or lying on his front on your forearm. Then tap or rub his back all over not just in the centre. It can take 10 or 15 minutes to start with. Even if he is farting persevere until you get a burp.

As with all things new practice really does help. Doesn't just have to be after a feed either. Can be during or any time he seems uncomfortable.

Good luck you are doing brilliantly.

I was always terrible at winding. Randomly, walking up the stairs carrying DS (holding his tummy against me) would bring a burp.

He was a trumpy baby though, we were told about the I love you massage - great for helping wind pass through.

It does get better when they near 12 weeks - this may feel forever away at the moment but it'll soon come round.

flissity · 23/07/2020 22:34

Whatever position you try (upright sitting on lap or over shoulder) don’t underestimate how long you sometimes need to persist with getting their wind up! It’s definitely not a 60second job.
I’m lucky most of the time dd burps almost as soon as I sit her up. But sometimes there’s just a bit more wind to get up!

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 24/07/2020 08:30

I also recommend walking up and down the stairs doing quite heavy steps - often worked for us!

Footlooseandfancy · 24/07/2020 09:14

It comes with practice. I found over putting baby looking over my shoulder worked well but she wasn't a sicky baby so I could be pretty confident that I wasn't going to end up with a back covered in vom!

My DH was great at getting burps up - must be the bigger hands!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 24/07/2020 14:29

My technique helped DS get up burps. A bit of bouncing/jiggling knee doesn’t do any harm either!

For getting out farts (not that it sounds like you have that problem), we found toes to nose helped and was quite satisfying! Baby on back and gently push toes up to touch baby’s nose and back down, repeat. Best done not too soon after milk!
