Moving on to size two teats - Tommee Tippee

My DS is now three months old, so technically he should be moving up a teat size to Tommee Tippee size 2. Is it important to move the baby up a size at this age and is there anything I should be aware of when doing so? I suspect DS had silent reflux when he was a bit younger, but he seems to be much more comfortable during feeds now, so I think he may have grown out of it. Thanks.

You don't have to move up test sizes, ever, if you don't want to do so. We combi fed (1 bottle of formula a day) and deliberately kept using the size 1 teats until I needed to wean him off my breast for health reasons around 9 months. At that point we switched the bottles to size 2 teats and upped the bottles he was having (expressed) to get him more used to having bottles. It worked fine and by 12/13 months he was having 3 bottles a day: one of expressed, one of formula and one of cows milk.

If you're only using bottles then when you chose to move up the tests is your choice. Is he chomping to get the milk out faster? If so maybe give it a go (they're a lot quicker flow) but if he's happy with the status quo then maybe leave it a few months longer once his reflux has definitely gone. There's no rush.

We also stuck with stage 1 while mixed feeding to avoid bottle preference (didn’t work, eventually she ended up preferring the bottle anyway). Once she was no longer BF we moved to stage 2 but had a few weeks of her being sick after a big feed - think she was gobbling too quickly and taking too much and it was just coming back up! She’s still on stage 2 now at 16months!

Not what you asked at all but I used the vari flow teats from day 1 with my second baby. With dd1 I went onto the vari flow teats after about a week. The stage 1 teats weren't quick enough for her (greedy baby 😂). So I just used them from day 1 with dd2. You could give those a go? But like a pp said, if she's happy as she is there is no need to move her onto the next stage.

Thanks for the replies. I’ve never heard of vari flow teats - I will have a look at those. I think he’s having to work quite hard to get as much milk as he wants quick enough at the moment, but on the other hand I don’t want to aggravate his reflux again. I think I’ll give a size two teat a go and see what happens - I can always revert back if it’s too much for him.
