Nappy changing facilities.

What are the changing facilities like in your local shopping mall etc?

I'm finding the places I go they are only really suitable for babies or smaller toddlers, trying to change a big toddler of near toilet training age is a challenge on small inadequate surfaces.

How do you deal with changing a big toddler when you are out?

I would say they are generally the fold down type. I don't remember it ever being an issue in terms of size, it's more that they can easily fall off those and they're quite flimsy. Only children's attractions really have anything more sizeable (local children's farm, they are tables built into the wall). Honestly though, I managed by having a changing mat and just doing it in an out of the way place in the park (good weather) or in the boot of my car if I really needed.

I often look at the weight limits and just pray DD won't break the fold down table! I do find nappy changing with a toddler is much quicker with a baby though - less likely to need a full outfit change, fewer layers and it's usually just wee when we're out (think I might be lucky though) so normally in and out in minutes.

*much quicker than with a baby

Stupid fingers

Yeah I agree those fold down tables are useless for a toddler.

Changing a toddler should be easier than a baby but it's not always the case if you have one that hates nappy changes ;-)

If at all possible, we did standing changes with a toddler. If that couldn’t happen, we would go out to the car.

Bitchinkitchen · 22/07/2020 20:02

Nappy mat on the floor.

Woodentopper · 22/07/2020 21:47

Nappy mat on the floor.
It's a pity that in this day and age we are still having to resort to a mat on the floor though :-(

How big are your toddlers?!

Tbf we potty trained at 2 so avoided most of this. Pull ups if you can be bothered taking bottoms off. Easier in this weather with shorts/skirts.

Woodentopper · 23/07/2020 13:59

He's turned 3 but showing little interest in potty training and is still in nappies.

Hercwasonaroll · 23/07/2020 20:34

They don't need to show interest. You're the parent and it's your job to train them. They don't just magically train overnight.

Aim for tesco/Asda/boots if you have the option! They have proper changing rooms rather than a fold down table. Otherwise make do with the boot of your car. My pram does not make a good changing surface 😂.

It's been such a long time since I've had to change him while out and about, I'm looking forwards to going places again.

I've been changing every single nappy on the floor, out and about or at home, since DD was 6m - once they can roll it just isn't safe to have them on a raised surface, even with straps.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/07/2020 16:59

no way would i put my baby on a loo floor, yours must be v clean

op the drop downs go to 15kg and usually have a strap. alt standing up

I did say nappy mat on the floor! And yes, my loo floor is clean, dirty bathrooms are gross.

It's not really the weight limit that worries me, it's the fact that a very wriggly baby like mine could absolutely do themselves damage even strapped in.

Hercwasonaroll · 25/07/2020 17:38

When do you ever leave them unsupervised on the changing table? I've never strapped a baby one one in my life.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/07/2020 17:54

my loo floor is clean of course yours is, i meant the supermarket, cafe etc floors.

There are very few mens toilets with nappy changing facilities and very few specific baby change facilities here. I used to assume the position in the attached photo. If hes three he is likely old enough for a stood up nappy change.

AnnaSW1 · 25/07/2020 18:08

I always use M&S. mine has great baby changing rooms

GoingBackTo505 · 25/07/2020 18:10

I always head for John Lewis. They have the best changing facilities and breastfeeding rooms ever.

Yeah, I'd agree about John Lewis but their stores are becoming a rarity these days :-(

Can’t you do it with him standing up? My toddler was standing up for nappy changes from about 18 months. Factor in pull ups and it’s a lot easier.

OverTheRainbow88 · 03/08/2020 12:34

I used to do my sons standing up!
