Miscarriage, no placenta.

Apologies in advance for the tmi. I had a miscarriage the day before yesterday, (I was about 12 weeks pregnant). I saw what came out very clearly, especially because it was breach. So it took quite a while to push out, even tho it was small. I saw that the fetus had come away, but on my final push, it went down the toilet and the cord snapped. I couldn’t catch either of them in time. So now I’ve passed the baby, but no placenta. I’m very worried. I had a bit of a temperature the night it happened. But now it’s gone back to normal. I’m barely bleeding. 1 pad Could do a full 24 hour period. Which is very odd. I called 111 and then the doctor surgery, who told me that we didn’t know what had come away?? Even tho I was very clear in saying the cord snapped, and went back inside. I still have a very firm tummy, like I’m due for a heavy period. Which is odd after a miscarriage (I’ve had one before and everything came away, making my belly very flat, almost hollow!!)
The doctor has said I need to wait and see. She said if it’s not all come away, I’ll possibly suffer symptoms of infection within about 3 days!! If I’m honest she wasn’t that helpful and didn’t answer my questions, hence the post. Is it possible that the placenta will pass on its own? I’m not showing any of the symptoms of complications, as in heavy bleeding, foul odour and flu like symptoms.
Can I just wait this out and hope for it to pass? The thing is, my body still feels pregnant. Even tho the baby is no longer there. I’m still very tired. And getting cramps in my feet during the night (I always get this from about 6 weeks pregnant on).
I should probably add I have a 1 year old little boy and family that can’t really help much. So Am dealing with this very much in auto pilot, because I have to focus on him.
But yea, some advice from anyone that’s had similar experiences would be really helpful. Side note, I’ve checked google but can’t find much about retained placenta after miscarriage.
I looks forward to ur replies.

You definitely need a scan at the early pregnancy unit to ensure that you’ve passed everything. From your description, it doesn’t sound like you have.
I’m sorry this has happened to you. Have you a partner or friend to support you during this time?

BabEmama · 22/07/2020 08:35

Thank u for replies and bumping. 😊 My partner knows. He’s being as much help as he can be.
I defo didn’t pass it all, as i said, The cord snapped and went back inside. So the placenta is still in there. Along with all the blood that you’d usually expect after a situation like this. Hence the bloated belly. The doctor didn’t say anything about a scan. As I said she’s just told me to wait and see. Which makes me hold out hope that the placenta may pass on it’s own. Fingers crossed.

If you're 12 weeks are you under the care of a midwife already? I do think you should phone your EPAU and try and get a scan. In my area you can self refer.

AugieMarch · 22/07/2020 08:49

Is there an Early Pregnancy unit near you? If so call them and they should be able to arrange a scan or will just tel you to come in and wait. The ones I have been to (not the same situation; earlier miscarriage and an ectopic) have both been drop in services where you go and wait, no need for an appointment, and are scanned the same day. I wouldn’t bother with the GP as they can’t really assess what has been retained without a scan - mine just told me to go the the EPU as they would be able to scan me and asses what had happened.

How are you feeling @BabEmama?

BabEmama · 22/07/2020 19:05

I’m ok thank u. Still no pain. I did pass a large clot earlier that I managed to catch, upon inspection it was a piece of afterbirth. Maybe it’s just gonna come out in clumps? With regards to midwives, i had no long self referred as we had not long found out I was pregnant. Hadn’t even had my first appointment yet. There isn’t an epu in my area. It’s the hospital or nothing. And having very few ppl to help with the baby (2 in total). I was trying to save that help until it was urgently needed. Plus the fact he’s not been away from me since he was born so I’m nervous about leaving him. Not because I don’t trust his dad or my mum. But we just have such a close bond. I’m taking my temp every hour. So any signs of infection, I’ll just head to a&e I think. Emotionally I’m all over the place. Hormones going haywire. Partner driving me mad. (He says he’s not got more annoying but I don’t believe him lol) thank u for checking on me. It means a lot just to have somewhere I can emotionally vent. Xx

Rant away!
I do think you should go to the hospital for a scan. You could have a lot of retained products. Your little one will be fine, but he won’t be if you aren’t well. You could end up in a far worse predicament if you leave this too long. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to frighten you but this could be very serious.

BabEmama · 23/07/2020 20:45

Yea I agree. It’s not looking like it’s gonna fix itself. I spoke to the dr again who said to take a pregnancy test. And if it’s positive that means I’ve retained tissue and will more than likely need a scan and a d&c. But I have seen there’s a tablet they can give that gives u contractions. I’m a bit scared of going under, so maybe that will be an option for me? Hopefully so. But she did say, if there’s not much in there , they may just leave it??!! I was surprised to hear that.

Sorry you are going through this. They should offer you a scan to see what’s going on. I miscarried at 11 weeks last year and delivered the baby along with the cord and a small piece of the placenta initially. I then started getting contractions around 20-30 minutes later and delivered the placenta. There was a lot of it so there was no confusion over what it was. The hospital told me that I could either have a scan to check there was no retained tissue, or take a pregnancy test 2 weeks later to confirm a negative. I took the scan to get it over with, and it also took weeks for the tests to be negative. Given you don’t appear to have passed the placenta I’m really surprised they’re just leaving you. Hope you can get this resolved soon Flowers

Please go to hospital.

I had a miscarriage go very wrong and it made me ill, I had to be rushed into theatre.

Don't mean to scare you but you don't want to get an infection or risk haemorrhage.

I'm sorry for your loss.
