How many oz should newborn have?

My baby is 8 days old and currently being fed between an 1-3 hours. Sometimes she only drinks 1oz because she falls asleep and usually at night about 2.5oz. Is this enough for her? She's only BF once or twice a day. We're trying to get rid of her jaundice at the moment.

What weight is she and how much is she taking in total in 24 hours? Has she been weighed recently?

newmum1312 · 21/07/2020 18:56

She was weighed on Friday and lost 250g which midwife said was fine. She'll be weighed again tomorrow. She's having about 8-10 feeds.

That sounds about right to me. My newborn had 2oz every couple of hours for the first couple of weeks. Then the feeds started getting gradually larger and more spaced out. Every baby is different though so you should check with your midwife if you have any concerns (you won't be discharged until the baby is back at birth weight).

Approx guide is 2.5oz per lb of body weight so if your lo is 7lb then approx amount would be 17.5oz in 24 hours. How many oz is she having?

I'm making feeds of 3oz but she's not finishing it all. As above, sometimes she'll have 1oz and sometimes nearly the whole bottle. She was born 8lb3.

Are you mainly feeding her formula? Mine were formula fed and the midwife said they don't usually lose weight in the first weeks as breast fed babies do.

If she's hungry crying and falling asleep after 1oz of milk, you can wake her a little by pulling the teat out and moving a bit. She might resume feeding.

That said, the midwife has said All is fine. Try not to worry too much.

I was advised to lie baby in a sunny spot (indoors, coming through a window) ) to help with mild jaundice.

That may be outdated advice as my babies are now teenagers.

At first she was BF but due to jaundice we were having problems and she's ended up having more formula than breast milk to flush her out. She's also never satisfied after breast feeding, doesn't like to stay latched and sometimes cries when I try.

Ok so if she's having 10 feeds a day of around 2oz that would be 20oz in 24 hours which sounds right for her size (about 8lbs?)

Try not to worry too much if she seems content and well in herself. (Regular wet nappies, pooing).

The health visitor should plot her weight in her red book to make sure it's following a healthy curve. I think red books are still a thing?

We usually calculate it as 150mls/kg/24h based on birth weight.

3.7x150=555mls (18oz)
555/8 =69 mls/feed (if feeding approx 3 hourly) or 46mls/feed (if feeding approx 2 hrly)
So anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5oz sounds about right.

dementedpixie · 21/07/2020 20:15

Nhs seems to say 150-200mls per kg. I'm sure it used to say 2.5oz per lb but my kids are teenagers now so info may have changed

I can't help with how much but if you need to keep them away I was advised to make my DS more uncomfortable when he wasn't waking for a feed or falling asleep in the middle (he was in the nicu at the time). So I had to strip him off to his bodysuit then if he was starting to sleep i would tickle his feet and this woke him up.
