Am I doing something wrong with solid foods ?

so my baby boy turned 5 months one week ago and the paed had said we can begin solid foods and she said to give 5 spoons 2 times a day for 2 days , of one food item , and then change the food
we started with pureed fruits , like papaya , banana and apple
then we gave groats with my breast milk. I think he was ok with it
But today we gave him rice and lentils mixed without breast milk and he for the first time passed solid stools
and he's been fussy and sleepy since

and he's not pulling my hair or playing like he used to . I think he's sleepy
are we doing something terribly wrong ?

I imagine rice and lentils will bung him up. He's young for solids and I don't see why you need to give him a specific amount at each meal. He certainly doesn't need 2 meals a day yet. If you are going to continue I'd stick to simple fruits/veg until they are older.

Hi, 5 spoons twice a day sounds quite a lot especially for early weaning before 6 months, I was told its just tastes when they first start like 1-2 teaspoons then slowly start to build them up as it's quite a lot for their tiny digestive systems to process xx

My lo was only taking 1-2 teaspoons when we started at 6 months.

Seems a lot for a baby so young- the nhs guidline is 6 months to start food. Are you in the UK?

Somethingorotherorother · 19/07/2020 18:14

Is there a reason why your doctor suggested this? That sounds like a LOT of food for a tiny baby.

Footlooseandfancy · 19/07/2020 18:18

It's only early days - he's just getting used to the food. Maybe he's a bit bloated after the rice and lentils!

maildaily · 19/07/2020 18:21

5 spoons seems loads for a baby so small. Baby rice has no nutritional content and may contain arsenic, you'd be better with an egg scrambled with breast milk or some chicken or beef mashed with milk or just try some finger foods.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/07/2020 18:26

5 months isnt too early. The NHS says 'around 6 months', and if you research into it theres debate about waiting until 6 months. Generally its agreed somewhere between 4-6 months if the baby is showing appropriate signs, but not before 17 weeks. The WHO says 6 months because it takes into consideration unhygienic conditions of some countries, and 'older' babies are better able to cope.

I do think 5 spoonfuls a day is a lot though. At the early stages puree is just so the baby can get used to something other than milk, not for nutritional content.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/07/2020 18:29

This is dangerously wrong advice. Before 6 months should ONLY be veg/fruit puree. Dairy/meat should only be introduced later on.

maildaily · 19/07/2020 18:39

Eggs aren’t dairy or meat Hmm I wouldn’t wean before 6 months but as you said it’s ok after 17 weeks, can’t see what the issue is

dementedpixie · 19/07/2020 18:43

Because meat, eggs dairy, gluten arent supposed to be introduced until 6 months old. Before that its gluten free cereals, fruit and veg. 10 spoons a day sounds too much for a just weaning baby

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 19/07/2020 18:55

Eggs aren’t dairy or meat

Ok, to be explicit then; babies shouldnt be given eggs, dairy or meat before 6 months.

attillathenun · 19/07/2020 19:49

I would just stick to fruit and veg OP, and give water if you can. I’m surprised the doctor said to give 2 solid meals a day when you’re just starting out! Pears, prunes and overripe bananas are good to get their gut moving if they are a bit bunged up.

sarahhoping · 20/07/2020 12:01

thanks for all your replies moms :)
yes the 5 spoons is a bit surprising.
I seriously doubt the paed now :/

Why is your baby under a paediatrician, is there an underlying health issue that means you should be weaning early? Could you call your HV for a second opinion?

dementedpixie · 20/07/2020 17:13

If OP isn't in the UK they may see a paed rather than a hv/gp

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 20/07/2020 17:56

5 MONTHS ISNT EARLY!

Somethingorotherorother · 20/07/2020 18:06

@Letsallscreamatthesistene are you quite alright dear?

The WHO and the NHS both recommend 6 months, therefore 5 months is early. Maybe have a cup of tea and get out for some fresh air, I think you've possibly spent too much time online today.

sarahhoping · 20/07/2020 18:11

Yes here we consult for babies on health and vaccination with a paeditrician. GP is for adults. Paed is for babies and kids
and I am beginning to suspect this lady.
She told us some time back, till 6 months baby has to be on exclusive breast feeding, but then when our baby turned 5 months, she gave us this consultation of start solids
5 baby spoons , 2 times a day, 2 days, then change food

The NHS says 'around 6 months'. The WHO says 6 months because of poor hygiene conditions in some countries. If you research into theres a debate surrounding waiting until 6 months.

Im just annoyed at people rigidly sticking to rules with no research into it and background knowledge, then advising others based on this. It happens a lot on MN.
