When did your babies poop become solid?

Sorry, such a TMI question I know. I only ask because my LO has been on solids for a month now and she has been doing solid (but squidgy) poops. I thought this was quite normal considering she's now on solids 3 times a day but I've now read that it's a sign of constipation. So I've increased her water intake to see if it makes a difference. Just wondering when they actually do go solid? I didn't realise a "solid food" poop wouldn't actually be solid 😅

not constipation if its still squidgy

Somethingorotherorother · 14/07/2020 19:42

It took a day or so of 3 meals a day for us. And ignore PP, squidgy poo can be a sign of constipation, the softer stuff squishes round the side of the hard stuff. Have you tried upping water intake? Prunes? Lots of fruit? Baby massage and bicycle legs? when DD was constipated my husband insisted that holding the baby in a sitting position and jiggling her vigorously helped, but i think mainly he just liked hearing her giggle

dementedpixie · 14/07/2020 19:44

She never said it was hard - she said it was formed but squidgy which is normal when on solids

@dementedpixie i know, i read her post! The hard stool is that still in the bowel, the squidgy stuff squeezes round it.

dementedpixie · 14/07/2020 19:49

She doesn't say that though. The formed poo has come out and is soft. Doesnt sound like constipation

FirstTimer2020 · 14/07/2020 19:59

They are definitely squidgy and she grunts when she passes, but she does poo a few times a day so I'm so conflicted as to whether it is constipation. I have increased her water intake today, but I'm scared to do this too much as I've read elsewhere that more than 2oz of water can harm them. She has frequent wet nappies as it is so i know she has fluid passing through her system well.

To be honest, I didn't realise how solid DSs poop was until I potty trained him. It all gets kind of smooshed in a nappy anyway. It didn't really hold any shape until he did it in the toilet (sorry...you did ask)

weepingwillow22 · 14/07/2020 20:06

My LO is 8 months and his poo varies hugely from solid pellets to a swidgy mess (sorry if too much info). It really depends on what he has been eating. It is a lot more solid if he has meat and if he has had less breastmilk that day.

FirstTimer2020 · 14/07/2020 20:12

@weepingwillow22 OK thats good to know! Think I still might have to up her water though, i have only had one squidgy mess as you call it in a few weeks and everything else has been soft formed poos

From weaning at 6 months with all three of mine.

Drivingdownthe101 · 14/07/2020 20:16

After weaning the only time it was a ‘squidgy mess’ was when they were ill.

Hercwasonaroll · 14/07/2020 20:18

Once weaning mine went solid.

I've been putting him on the potty when he grunts and it's like a mini adult poo consistency.

FirstTimer2020 · 14/07/2020 20:22

OK, so i shouldn't worry too much then unless she is very obviously in pain or hasn't passed in a long time?

Yes, it's very rare for a baby who is still mostly breastfed to be constipated.

Try to make sure she has some kind of fruit once a day, that helps.

But I agree with the others who say it never looks solid in a nappy, it's the nappy which makes it smush like that. They look like normal poos when they start doing them in the toilet/potty. So I think we might all be talking at cross purposes with different definitions of solid!

BertieBotts · 14/07/2020 20:28

DS2 sometimes does these poos which look like a massive hard ball and you look at it and look at him and wonder how it came out :o

weepingwillow22 · 14/07/2020 20:36

I gave my 8 month old grapes cut in half the other day and they all came out again identical to how the went in! He does seem to shovel them all into his mouth in one go though, I don't think much chewing was happening despite his 6 teeth Grin

FirstTimer2020 · 14/07/2020 20:46

Haha OK, so much more confused now than I was to be honest!! I'm talking like a ball of play dough, formed but smushed easily

OP posts:
Hercwasonaroll · 14/07/2020 20:51

Isn't most people's poo playdoh consistency?

dementedpixie · 14/07/2020 20:54

Sounds normal, not constipation

BertieBotts · 14/07/2020 21:36

Have you ever had a dog and therefore picked up dog poo?

All poo is like that. If it was more solid than playdough it would be a problem!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 14/07/2020 21:44

I think that OP means that exclusively milk-poo (up to 6 months) is basically yellow runny explosions, but her child has changed to solid adult-like poo immediately on weaning.

I don’t know the answer OP, because dd (7 months) only ever pooed weekly or fortnightly before weaning, and was always therefore fairly solid.

When we started weaning she stayed the same so did get constipated and is now on Lactulose - poos daily now rather than weekly, and no screaming/straining without achieving anything. I think those are the signs you’re looking for for actual constipation.
