How many layers???

I'm pregnant and buying baby clothes at the moment....

How do you know how many layers is ok for a baby? I know you can use common sense, but is there a safer way to check?

For instance, my baby will be born in December so it's cold...

If they have a vest, their outfit, a cardigan and then a coat - is that too much?

Of course if they are in a pram with a blanket, that may be too much?

But is there any guidance on this? Or reference?

General rule is one more layer than you. So if you’re in a T-shirt and jumper, they should have a vest too. Except when it’s reallllly hot in summer.

Agree with above that's the message. One extra layer than you which is usually their vest.

No coats in car seats. Look at star blankets.

@Lockdownseperation

No coats in car seats. Look at star blankets.
Do you mean use a star blanket as a replacement for a coat in the car? Is that because they are not as thick as a coat?

Yes, they are a thin fleece layer and so easy to get on and off.

Also look a getting a maternity coat which you can wear into of baby when that are in the sling.

The star wraps are brilliant

But yes, echoing what others have said, 1 more layer than you

Lockdownseperation was right. No fluffiness when you put your child in the car seat. Try putting your child in the carseat with the coat on and adjust the straps. Then take the coat off and see how loose the straps are!!!! That's not good. You can put a blanket over the straps. A cardigan is ok as they tend not to be bulky.

Several thinner layers are more effective than one big puffy layer for warmth. I used merino base layers (long sleeved vest and leggings or tights under their outfit) for my babies in winter

Also! To check whether a baby is cold or hot don't touch their hands or face. You have to check their chest or back. Blood circulation in babies works different from adults.
