2year old sitting up and talking while asleep

My 2 year old has started sleep talking and sitting up for the entire night! Last night he spent 15 hours in his bed sitting up, throwing himself about and laughing as though he is delirious. If I try to wake him up he opens his eyes (while still asleep) and pushes me away. It's very distressing to watch. Is there a deeper issue I should be worried about? Other than this he is physically well with no temp. Help!

15 hours is a long time to sleep. Is this normal for him? I'd call your HV or GP.

I used to sleep walk and talk.. stopped around 15 years old.

15 hours?!

15 hours of sleep would concern me more than anything else

It sounds a bit like night terrors although they don’t usually last all night. One of mine had them terribly between around 2-4 years, the other had them occasionally between around 4 - 8 but only generally when sleeping in an unusual and different place eg camping. They both talked as though awake and one of them walked about, the other sat up in bed and seemed entirely conscious but neither rememberEd anything about it the next morning. Google it OP there’s lots of advice on how to deal, if it seems to fit what’s happening with yours.

Should add that both of mine used to behave as though terrified of me when it happened, which was awful for me. But this is actually really common because, if it is night terrors, they are stuck in a dream phase and not conscious at all, so they don’t recognise you, even though it seems that they do.

He doesn't ever sleep for 15 hours. He was only in his bed for so long as he wasn't 'fully' asleep so he must have still be tired. I guess if you spend so long moving around then you aren't really resting.

I don't think it's night terrors as he spends the whole night laughing and making the same sounds he does with his sister in the day time. At least he's happy Hmm

This might be a silly question but can you have happy night terrors?

I don’t really know - neither of mine did! They seemed terrified although as I said they didn’t remember anything of them the next day.

Our DS talks alot in his sleep and is constantly moving all around the bed, I used to wonder what quality sleep he was getting. I talk in my sleep and don't keep still also.

I would give the HV a quick call I'm sure they will put your mind at rest, IME, it's always best to check it out, if just for peace of mind.
