My DS (11 weeks) has been crying and even screaming on and off for the last hour. He had a feed (formula) an hour ago and then I burped him for quite a while but nothing came out. But he did then do quite a large posset all over my shoulder! What could be causing this? Please help Sad

Could it be colic? Early evenings have been like this for a while but it seems to be getting worse recently.

Check his fingers and toes carefully to make sure no hair is wrapped round them. Check his body for rashes.

Crying makes baby swallow air so he may need winding again. Have you tried feeding him again, walk in a sling, a bath?

He’s in the sling now, which always seems to calm him down. I was just concerned as doesn’t screaming mean he’s actually in pain rather than just upset? Sad

How long has he been awake? Could he be overtired?

As PP says, check there are no hairs wrapped tightly around fingers or toes.

Colic usually starts earlier than 11 weeks, unless maybe he was premature?

Does he have a temperature?

Hope he's better soon OP, it's horrible when they're like this! Walking with him in a sling may work, as PP suggests.

He hasn’t been awake long - he had a nice long nap this afternoon. He’s in the sling now and is calm again. I just don’t get why he cries and screams between 5/6-8ish every evening?

I don’t currently have a thermometer as my one broke. I must get a new one ASAP...

Newborns have a witching hour. From that time most nights. We had it. Our bed time is 6pm to stop this.

Fatted · 09/07/2020 19:03

If he's crying when he's sicking up it could reflux. Been there, done that. Mine screamed for the first four months of his life.

Lj199024 · 09/07/2020 19:05

My LO gets like this although is 4 weeks. Generally tends to be overtired and it happens in the evening ( for us) due to an accumulation of rubbish naps. There's s white noise video on YouTube for colicky babies I swear by. I hope he settles for you there's really nothing worse xx

Fivebyfive2 · 09/07/2020 19:15

Our ds used to get like this sometimes, I think it was a combination of wind/gas and being overtired. We would try massage, cycling his legs, winding every which way (sitting up, over shoulder, lying on his tummy and patting him for a few seconds etc) At that age he liked to be snuggled into me and I'd sing to him, sometimes that would send him to sleep. Good luck op, it's tough but has improved massively since getting past 3/4 months xxx

Yes, the witching hour. I remember it well! Think it started subsiding by 12 weeks. We took it in turns to walk around the house with her in a sling.

linerforlife · 09/07/2020 19:29

Yes if it's every night it's likely just the witching hour phase - keep baby close in a sling, white noise etc will be helpful

HelloRose · 09/07/2020 19:46

I agree with others, it sounds like the witching hour. Unexplained screaming when fed, changed and no temp etc. Remember it well
Around 11/12 weeks we had about a week of it and I remember desperately hoping it was just a phase as it was such hard work. As ever, it was

Persipan · 09/07/2020 19:52

Witching hour. Mine screams pretty much every evening at about 5pm - at one point you could almost set your watch by him. And I do mean screams - inconsolable, awful sobbing, tears, going hoarse, the works. To start with it really freaked me out because I was sure there must be something terribly wrong, but I'm pretty sure he just gets overwhelmed and needs to vent it out to process his day. He seems to be doing it slightly less often and for less long now, though, so here's hoping he may get it out of his system sometime soon!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 09/07/2020 22:48

Mine did this too. It’s awful! We did as a previous poster suggested and started with a proper early bedtime (7pm here). That actually helped a fair bit. I thought he was too young for a proper bedtime, but apparently not.

Yorkiee · 10/07/2020 14:27

We had an episode where lo used to cry at 6pm everyday for two weeks. Stopped now. But timing was exactly the same.
