Children’s duvet - confused!!

DD is 4’in Dec. Currently in cot bed with a 4.5 tog duvet. No problems.

In process of buying her a proper single bed but confused about what tog duvet she needs. All the online guidance says they shouldn’t have more than 4.5 at this age but presume that relates to a Cot bed which is maybe smaller and traps the heat etc? A small child in a single bed would surely be a bit cooler and warrant something a bit warmer - I was thinking a 7.5 tog would be about right but now doubting myself! She wears thin PJs and her room hovers between 19-21 degrees most of the time (until we have stupid heatwaves and then her room is hotter than the gates of hell 🙄😁) She is generally a “warm” kid.

So stick with 4.5 tog and maybe a blanket in cooler months or would a 7.5’tog be fine? 4.5 just seems thin for a “big bed” especially in winter!

Don’t want to have multiple thickness duvets to change between depending on season as I have no room to store them.

What do your kids use?

Thanks In advance 😊

My son just turned 4 and he has a 7.5 tog duvet on his bed most of the year round. I bought a 4.5 tog one originally when we started using duvets (2ish years old) having read the same guidance as you. However, during the winter he complained of being cold so I bought him a 7.5 tog one and he has had that ever since. I get the 4.5 tog one out in summer if it’s really hot only. His room is around 18-19 degrees most of the time and he wears thin PJs. Though he seems to like being quite warm!

Interesting as we are about to put our 3 year old in a single bed soon and I was thinking a 9tog as google says best for autumn/ spring. Her room is quite cool. In Summer she just has a blanket, and in winter I put a blanket on top of her current toddler quilt.

RedCatBlueCat · 09/07/2020 19:20

What about getting a 4.5 tog and a 2.5 tog. They can be added together in the winter, but are much smaller than a full winter duvet to store in the summer.

Thanks for the suggestions guys I really appreciate it!

@OnlyFoolsnMothers yeah my MIL just said “I presumed you’d just buy a normal 10 tog duvet?” But honestly she would boil in that 😂

Definitely can’t store two duvets, so any other comments greatly appreciated if anyone has any wise words?!

I'd buy the two as suggested, and one, when not necessary, at the end of the bed.
Or get a vacuum storage bag to reduce the storage space.

Iverunoutofnames · 10/07/2020 00:21

I have a split one (vacuum packed under DDs bed) This is useful when they puke in the night and there’s another duvet at hand (except in winter of course).
Anyway they aren’t like double ones and they are fairly small and easier to store.

My DS runs hot so we stuck with a 4.5 tog when we moved him to a single bed. He throws it off in the summer and sometimes had an extra blanket on top in the winter.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2020 07:31

I have honestly never checked or thought about the tog rating of my kids' duvets Confused

Just get the cheapest ikea/argos one.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2020 07:32

In summer they use the duvet cover without the duvet, in winter they have thicker pyjamas and an extra fleece blanket if they want it.

BikeRunSki · 10/07/2020 07:33

DS has a thick and a thin duvet. We put the one that is not in use laid out under his mattress, like a reverse mattress topper!!

dementedpixie · 10/07/2020 07:35

In a single bed you can have up to 10.5tog. For a toddler/cot bed maximum recommended is 4.5tog. Something to do with the relative surface area between the child and the bed. We use 4.5tog in summer and 10.5tog when it's colder (although ds (13y) tends to stick to 4.5tog year round )

Waitingforboristoletusfree · 10/07/2020 07:36

Get 7.5 and have a throw at end of bed which can be used on its own in summer or doubled up in winter

BendingSpoons · 10/07/2020 07:38

It is supposedly about how much the duvet wraps round their smaller bodies, hence the 4.5tog recommendation. DD4 still has a 4.5tog duvet. In fact she is still using het cot bed one, as DH felt it would be easier for her to move to cover herself. She is a warm person too. I don't think she particularly needs a warmer duvet with a bigger bed. Could you try her with her existing duvet for a while? Or buy a 4.5 and have a spare blanket?

Flamingolingo · 10/07/2020 07:57

My children are in doubles (big cold house, children who don’t sleep). They have a 4.5 tog in summer (sometimes off completely, sometimes sleep in just pants), and a 10.5 tog in winter, but we have single glazing, bay windows in both bedrooms and it gets really chilly. I guess I’m saying just use your common sense, guidelines are just a guide, they don’t always work for everyone

Hartleyhare1206 · 11/07/2020 22:09

Thanks everyone, some great advice and some very practical ideas I’d never thought of 🤦‍♀️ This is why I love mumsnet!

Bed is now ordered. DD loves trying them in the shop and is super excited, but unimpressed at having to wait a month for it and eyed her cot bed with utter horror at bedtime tonight 😂

Have ordered 2 x 4.5 tog Duvets. Bed has a storage drawer that we didn’t think we would have so the spare can go in there. As you’ve rightly suggested we need two for night time vomming 🤮 can always double them up if very cold and have ordered a big teddy bear throw that can live on the bed too.

Hopefully that’s us sorted! Xx
