Grunting Baby Syndrome / reflux

Hello,

So I've been up all night listening to my 17 day old baby grunt and strain all night as though he's in discomfort. There's been no poo however as that looks like what he's trying to do. Before tonight I did suspect he was suffering from reflux as he tends to get the hiccups as soon as he's put down and he keeps clearing his throat and he sounds a little wheezy. He also tends to spit up a bit of his milk too. Does anyone have any advice? I've had very little sleep and worried about my LO.

Hi this sounds very normal to me, my little boy did the same from about 3 weeks till around 14/15 weeks then all of a sudden it stopped, it used to happen most of the night and got worse from 4am onwards, eventually I got to learn what was asleep grunting and what was awake grunting xx

My baby has also always been a prolific strainer and grunter, also worse from about 4am until morning. She’s 14 weeks now and still does it, though doesn’t seem as distressed now and doesn’t go as red in the face. Keeps me awake too, absolutely maddening!

Sounds normal, some new babies do it a lot and they’ll grow out of it soon enough. I was really worried about it and convinced that my son must be in terrible pain but the doctor explained that it’s because they can’t yet coordinate all the tummy and bowel muscles and it’s something they’ll get in time. Sure enough it suddenly improved.

Oh my! Part of me is relieved he is ok and it is normal but the other part of me is thinking "oh my god, I have to endure this for another few weeks!" Goodbye sleep Confused
