Not sure if its normal/what I can be doing to help?

My baby boy is so gassy and cries in pain with the trapped wind...is this normal/is there anything I can do?

I cycle his legs, do baby massage & it does help relieve some of the pain and does make him trump.

Not sure if its something in my diet as some days hes okay (not 100% and other days..like yesterday hes really upset).

He poos everyday & is fine consistency wise.

Hes breastfed btw

Thanks in advance :)

If this is your first child it's difficult to say if the level of wind and pain you describe is normal or not, because you have no comparison.

Suffice to say, normal healthy babies do produce a lot of gas. So effective winding is absolutely necessary in order to avoid trapped wind.

As a minimum, wind until you get a burp after every feed. It may be that baby might do two or three big burps after every feed so you might need to be patient and wait for these. Some babies also need winding mid-feed as well as the end of the feed.

When feeding, make sure babys head is always physically above their stomach so that gravity helps the milk go down without air. Baby's also usually need time upright (on your shoulder) after feeding.

Yep, BF babies can need winding (DS very definitely did). We also used infacol about this age for a few weeks to help ease the wind. It's a bit dubious that it actually works but we noticed the difference if we forgot for more than one feed

But it is the age at which they start to be aware of things happening in their gut and be a bit uncomfortable sometimes. It does get better.

Following as my 4 week old boy is the same. After a feed he can be quite unsettled and kick and writhe around quite a bit. Sometimes he just won’t burp, but should I keep trying? He gets agitated so I stop and just cuddle him instead. But then I don’t think the gas has come out? Would you just keep trying even if he is grumpy?

Position wise also to BF I can’t seem to do the rugby ball one I can’t get comfy. I try now to sit him up on my side with his legs across my body, but then his face isn’t directly on me, he has to turn his head to the side to feed. This doesn’t seem right either? Any other options? Had a c section so Nervous to have him lying in my scar

Thanks

Winding a newborn might just mean placing baby upright on your shoulder as they drop off to sleep. Rubbing their back a bit. It need not be vigorous to the point of causing baby to be agitated. Just rest baby in an upright position after a feed until a burp comes. Its often changing positions that causes the burp to come in the end (changing shoulders or putting down to change nappy). But yes, keep going until you get a burp, it is important.
