Did this sound like reflux?

My newborn is 2 weeks old and for the past week or so has had very disturbed sleep from about 2-3am onwards. Initially, I thought it was wind but now I'm noticing it might actually be a reflux issue. He often spits up after a feed and when I put him down or burp him he will get the hiccups. Once he's laid flat in his crib he will grunt and move on to his side where he seems to be more comfortable but after that he will keep coughing and grunting and just seem uncomfortable. He doesn't cry but there's has been times where he's been that is uncomfortable is gotten to that.

He is mainly on Aptamil (First Infant) and has at least 1 bottle off my expressed milk a day.

I don't know what to do, any help would be great!

Congratulations on your new baby!

It could be, but also could be normal newborn stuff.

Things that help with reflux are:
Feeding baby in a more upright position
Keeping baby upright for 20/30 minutes after a feed
Rub don’t pat for winding
Wind during feed after every oz or 2
Feed smaller amounts more often (if baby tolerates)
Tilt the crib a little
We also found the bottle type made a difference

Try those first and see how you get on.

A dummy also helps refluxy and windy babies

(as well as the excellent list given in the post above)

We had to use aptamil comfort for a while which helped.

I honestly think that just sounds like a newborn baby! They grow out of it though. Hang on in there.

I can't believe this is normal newborn behaviour, we've been up since 3am listening to him grunt, strain and kick about. We've only had a couple of hours sleep and he just seems so unsettled.

It does sound like normal newborn behaviour to be honest, they are so loud! No-one tells you about the noises newborns make. Is he awake when making these noises? Took me a while to realise my LO was often grunting etc in her sleep, I'd always assumed she was awake and wanted picking up.

She's mildly refluxy, not enough to need medication, but holding her upright after feeds and tilting the crib helped, great advice from the PP above. Lots and lots of winding too.

If he is awake, will he sleep better on you? You could take shifts of having him sleep on you if you're worried about him being overtired. In my opinion two tired parents and a happy baby is better than two tired parents and a screaming overtired baby!

@Hodge85 wrap your baby in a snug swaddle. It helps to calm all the kicking and jerking.

Just a giant muslin is fine for this. Or a cut-up bed sheet.

Also try a dummy. Teamed together - dummy and swaddle are great soothes for these newborn grunts and jerks.
