I know the websites all reccomend powder but if I have a costco stash of liquid detergent will it really do any damage?

I don't really want to buy more detergent if I don't have to

I used cloth for both my children - and I used whatever detergent was on hand. Sometimes liquid and sometimes powder. Surely there isn't some new rule about the type of detergent to be used ? You're just going to be washing cotton cloth , use what you like .

I think liquid might reduce absorbency, so the nappies won’t last as long between changes. I used some the other day as a one off as I’d run out of powder. No harm done but I guess long term it might not be good. Also if yours are brand new, not following the washing instructions invalidates the warranty. If second hand there’s no warranty anyway so it matters less.
The liquid detergent won’t go out of date...why not spend £3 on a small pack of powder just for the nappies and continue with the liquid for everything else? Given how much the nappies cost it seems a silly thing not to do.
