Is this cows milk allergy?

Spoke to my friend about some symptoms my EBF 6 week old is having and she suggested it may be cows milk allergy. Just wanted to see if anyone agrees. About two weeks ago she started with a rash on her face, neck and shoulders. GP via video call said it was baby acne. She also is super gassy- brings knees upto tummy, squirms when on her back, spits up frequently, vomits a whole feed up around once a day. She’s always passing wind and when she does she poops at the same time, her nappy is basically always dirty with really loose, watery yellow/green poop. She has nappy rash from always pooping despite barrier creams, frequent changing, nappy free time etc. Sometimes she gets really fussy and cries at the breast too, especially in the evening. She’s also quite congested and often sounds snuffly. Anyway I don’t know if this is all separate issues, I read only 0.5% of EBF babies have cows milk allergy so don’t want to alter my diet so drastically if not necessary!

Similar symptoms to my now 12 year old DS. He was diagnosed at around 7 months after his skin flared up (hives) in contact with dairy when I started weaning. He was so much happier when I cut it out of my diet and continued breastfeeding and we weaned him on a milk, egg, nut, soy, gluten, sesame and shellfish free diet until he was 13 months old and had skin prick tests. He showed allergies to milk, eggs and nuts.

He outgrew the milk allergy about aged 7, could tolerate cooked egg by 9, and aged 12 is still likely to grow out of his raw egg allergy though the nut allergy is now likely to stick around for life.

Recently found out my child has CMPA after withdrawal of CM, change of formula, then slow introduction until symptoms reappeared. Symptoms were - rash on neck, eczema, constantly pooey nappies a d subsequent appointment rash. Doctors continuous tried to treat symptoms rather than cause. Was told constant pooing was norm for bf babies, I knew this wasn't normal. Eventually referred to dietician.

Nappy rash not appointment rash..

Same. She was pooping a bit with each gas and this is my third baby so I knew something was up but doc didn’t think it was abnormal. What I thought was baby acne now makes sense as CMPA rash and the stomach pain seemed to flare up when I did have my tea with milk or dairy dessert.

My second exclusively breast fed dc had cmpa from birth, his symptoms were vomiting, literally constantly throughout the day, uncomfortable and crying all the time scrunching body and crying when lying flat too, along with lots of wind and trapped wind, also always snuffly and strange sounding breathing, we had to put him to sleep on his tummy as only way he would sleep.

We kept getting told it was reflux and prescribed different medications, in the end I actually wrote a post on here, and quite a few ladies suggested cmpa, i was very sceptical but desperate so cut out all traces of dairy completely and started soya products instead, he got even worse, so I cut out Soya and every single symptom disappeared, it was like someone had swapped out my baby. HV then referred me to a dietician who confirmed it was cmpa and soya allergies.

The only really way to know is to eliminate but you have to do it completely and read every label, you will be shocked by how much milk and soya are in. Oh and Oatly Barista is the best milk I found from trying them all 🙂

Really hope you find out what the problem is, it is so stressful having an unwell baby and not knowing how to help. And on a positive note, alot of the time when they have the milk allergy as a baby the dietician can help you to wean them back onto milk gradually, my son is now able to have dairy and doing great.

Hi my Ds is suffering from diahrea since his birth and the poop is very runny and mucusy with often little blood. He cries alot before poop.his stomach makes sound aswell. Talked the gp.they referred to infant feeding team and suggested it to be cows milk protein allergy.
I have cut of dairy from my diet.its been 3 days but he still have ruuny mucusy poops with blood and alotof discomfort while doing it.
Has anyone had such experience. It makes me really anxious and feel sad for little soul's suffering.
Thanks in advance

It can take 6 to 8 weeks for the dairy to leave your system
Blueroses99 · 17/10/2021 07:48

I saw improvements after 3 weeks. 3 days isn’t long enough to fully get the dairy out of your system.

Did your little one also had blood in his stools?

MrsAvocet · 22/10/2021 03:36

Hi Hope89 I have had 2 babies with CMPA both of whom had blood in their stools. It is caused by the dairy proteins causing inflammation in the lining of the gut so it can take quite a while to settle fully. The dairy proteins need to get out of your system, and out of his system, plus the gut lining needs to heal. My boys are in their late teens now so it is a long time ago and I can't remember exactly how long it took to get better completely but ot was definitely weeks rather than days.
Don't be afraid to call the feeding team back for more advice if you are worried though - it's what they are there for.
I hope things improve soon. As I say, it's a long time ago for me, but I still remember the anxiety of those early days and the upset of not being able to comfort your baby. I'm sure you are doing a great job - make sure you look after yourself too though.

Blueroses99 · 25/10/2021 20:34

@Hope89 my little one didn’t have blood in stools however the stools were completely different after 3 weeks of me being dairy free. That’s when i realised that the dairy had left my system. Everytime I had a slip up after that (easily done I’m afraid), she would have mucousy poo within 48 hours.

Our baby is 4 weeks old. We have had trips to the hospital and GP but they just advised there is no infection and could be an CMPA so put us on Aptamil pepti 1. We were on aptamil before but her poos from 2 weeks were bright orange, smelt foul and burnt our babies bum. They were also mucusy. Now they are green but still mucusy and our baby had gas. Poos and gas also smell still but not as bad. Has anyone else had this?

NameChange30 · 22/03/2025 13:47

Probably a good idea to start a new thread rather than resurrecting a 3.5yo thread.

I don't know about Aptamil Pepti 1 off the top of my head but it might be that your baby needs a different hypoallergenic formula. IIRC Neocate is the best one for the most allergic babies - although also very expensive so doctors don't tend to prescribe it straight away, they see how baby gets on with the others first.
