...or is it still a SIDS risk? My LO (2 months old) is currently asleep on the sofa next to me but is lying on his front. I don’t know whether to turn him (probably waking him up) or to leave him be!

He shouldn't be sleeping on the sofa and definitely not face down

I let my DS sleep on his front when on the sofa too. Often this was the only way for him to get a proper sleep. If he is comfy, and you are nearby to check then on him then I wouldn’t wake him, as I didn’t with mine, but if you are anxious about it then you could move him

Somethingsnappy · 29/06/2020 12:18

My opinion is that this is fine.....you're watching him.

Forgot to add my DS was propped up over a nursing pillow so face was clear and vosablen

What’s wrong with sleeping on sofa out of interest? It’s a big sofa so even if he did roll over (which he can’t at the moment) he wouldn’t reach the edge - plus I’m sitting right next to him.

He’s sleeping on his front on a blanket, with head turned to the side.

DementedPixie, it's the adult falling asleep on the sofa WITH the baby that's unsafe, not the baby sleeping on the sofa, totally supervised.

BrokenLink · 29/06/2020 12:22

It's safe if you are supervising, but it's not a good habit to get into because babies that age easily start to prefer it. I would suggest using white noise whilst turning your baby onto their back whilst they are in a deep sleep. Could your baby nap in the pram? It's probably safer than the sofa and you can push it back and forth to settle them.

dementedpixie · 29/06/2020 12:25

Babies have died sleeping on sofas. Do you really want to get him used to sleeping in that position?. He is safer on his back on a firm surface

ItDoesntRhyme · 29/06/2020 12:26

The issue isn't falling off, which would be unpleasant but ultimately he'd survive. It's wriggling and getting stuck down the back and suffocating/strangling. Also softer than a bed so more likely to suffocate if face down. But if you're there then neither is going to happen.

newmum234 · 29/06/2020 12:32

Ok, thanks all. I’ve just turned him over (reluctantly as he looked so content) and he’s now wide awake! Probably for the best but a shame I had to wake him. I will know for next time anyway.

Not helpful advise now OP but I would have risked it if you were 100% sure you would stay awake and supervise. As others have said it is not the sofa itself but the risk of them suffocating underneath you or against the back of the sofa. With a 2 month old I imagine you’re shattered anyway so probably for the best - hang in there. I started to place DS in the crib in the bedroom for naps when he was about 8-10 weeks old and would lie down on the bed myself for a nap. It wasn’t always successful as he preferred boob snoozes or sleeping upright on my chest, but ultimately it is much safer in a crib or basket or pram.

My first I was rigorous not to let them sleep anywhere except in their basket. On their backs. End of

My second I was much more relaxed! Ha.
